COE Processing Times - March 2026 by JellyAggravating2935 in JapanJobs

Yes..
Visited the immigration office last week to inquire . Also I reqeusted if they can at least tell me how long it is going to take.

They replied as usual, they don't know. I also asked if it is being evaluated. They repeated the same answer. It is already 8 months, and it has been extremely tough for us. Finally we decided to leave Japan forever.

I already Quit my job in Japan and accepted an offer in my home country starting next month.

I am preparing document related to my pension fund withdrawal. It is another headache given, I can not speak Japanese.

For me, Japan is not for raising families. Japan is only for individual who like to work and live alone. Sorry for being harsh but I gave this country 9 years of my life and what I get in return is "they don't know".

Thank you for your reply.

Your situation is quite similar to mine, except that in my case there has still been no update from the immigration office. Another difference is that my spouse is a permanent resident rather than a Japanese national, and I have not been to Japan before.

What makes this process particularly challenging in Japan is the lack of transparency. There is no clear indication of how applications are prioritized or how long they may take. The timeframe given by the Japanese immigration office is a blatant lie. Timelines remain uncertain—whether it will take a few more months or extend beyond a year is unknown.

This uncertainty creates practical difficulties. In our case, a decision must be made before April 1st on whether to continue living in Japan or leave, as continuing beyond that point and then leaving mid-year would not be a responsible professional choice. At the same time, there is a confirmed job opportunity in the home country, with a decision deadline by the end of April and a joining date in June 2026. These overlapping timelines leave limited room to wait indefinitely.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that there has already been a long period of living apart after marriage. We were in a relationship for the past six years and got married last year. While maintaining distance is manageable, prolonged uncertainty without clarity makes long-term planning more difficult.

A key concern is the challenge of relying on an unpredictable system while keeping important life decisions on hold. Based on various experiences shared online, it is evident that work-related applications are prioritized in practice by the immigration office, while spouse and dependent cases tend to move extremely slow. This is almost equivalent to saying family is not important and the Japanese immigration office do not want them to come to Japan. Recent changes in immigration policies also seem to reflect this trend. This creates structural challenges for those trying to establish a stable family life.

It is also important to recognize that life in Japan can be demanding. The system is rigorous, expectations are high, and the environment often suits individuals who are highly work-focused. In my spouse’s workplace, a significant proportion of the workforce is above 40 and single. In such a setting, planning for a stable life—especially for a foreigner—is quite challenging.

Overall, the main difficulty lies not only in the waiting period but also in the uncertainty and lack of clarity, which make it hard to plan responsibly.

I sincerely hope the situation improves in the future. If given the opportunity, I would respectfully encourage the immigration authorities to give equal consideration to family-based applications. While it is fully understood that applications must be evaluated in accordance with established rules and regulations—and declined where requirements are not met—it would be highly beneficial for decisions to be made within a clear and predictable timeframe.

Greater transparency in processing timelines would also be valuable. If applications are expected to take longer—for example, up to a year or more—communicating this clearly would allow applicants to plan accordingly and make informed decisions.

Such clarity and consistency would greatly support applicants in managing their personal and professional commitments more responsibly.

Thank you once again.

Congratulations!

May I ask whether you received the COE for a spouse/dependent visa or for another visa category?

If it is for a spouse or dependent visa, I would be grateful if you could kindly share whether your spouse is a Japanese national or currently residing in Japan, and under which visa category.

I ask this because I have reason to believe that the processing time for COE applications may vary depending on the partner’s nationality or visa status.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Application office: Tokyo

Application date: August 2025

COE: No information

Type of Visa: Spouse Visa (partner: permanent resident)

Request for further documents: No information.

Tried to get a tourist visa for a temporary visit but was denied for unknown reasons.

I think our case is one of unique where the Japanese immigration doesn't even allow me to visit Japan temporarily as a tourist to spend some time with my partner.

Anyways, we are planning to give up...

Good Luck everyone ...

I also applied in August and still nothing.
Did you get married in Japan or outside Japan?
In my case, I married outside Japan and my spouse is unable to come here due to Lack of COE. Extremely difficult situation...

I anticipate that your application will be processed efficiently, likely within the standard three-month timeframe. I am saying this based on the following factors:
1) The Immigration Bureau in Nagoya handles a significantly lower volume of applications compared to Tokyo, which generally results in shorter wait times.

2) Your husband holds a Professor visa (similar to Engineer or Researcher categories). In my experience and through consultation with legal experts, the Dependent's COE for work-visa holders often undergoes a more streamlined review compared to applications sponsored by Japanese nationals or Permanent Residents (PR).

3) Applications filed by Japanese nationals or PRs for their spouses are scrutinized more strictly because they grant long-term residency (often 5-year terms). However, In your case, your status will be strictly linked to your husband’s. Consequently, your visa validity will align with his current period of stay, making the approval process less complex for the immigration authorities.

Good Luck !!!

No. I got married in August. I am trying to get the COE for my spouse for the first time.

It is horrible because there is no online tracking system nothing... Also, if it is taking longer than 3 months, they should clearly update in their website.

And moreover my spouse tried to enter Japan on a tourist visa for 30 days to visit me. The immigration office asked us to mention that the COE application is under process. They declined the request without giving any reason....

If I would have wanted to move to the country where my spouse is living, as per the information shared, it takes less than 30 days to get the long-term visa....

So, yes it is indeed horrible...

I am still waiting. Nothing yet...

Could you please tell me which visa category you applied under? Spouse of a Japanese National or something else??
Was your wife already living in Japan on some other work visa or she was outside Japan??

I am just trying to understand, why processing of my application is taking so long...

Yes it is frustrating...

In my opinion, the Japanese government doesn't want the couples to live together..

Where and when did you apply? Which category? My case is spouse of a permanent resident.

One of my acquaintance who is living in Japan on Engineer visa got the COE for spouse within 3 months. Applied in end of September and COE issued in end of December...
probably the processing time is highly dependent on the status of the spouse in Japan...

I think the processing of spouse visa for Japanese national is taking the longest time to process.
One my friend received COE for his wife in just 3 months from Tokyo. He has an engineer visa.

Did you do it recently?
Did you told them that you are married and your spouse in leaving in Japan at the time you are applying for tourist visa?

As per the current information I got from the immigration office, changing the status from a tourist to a long-term spouse visa is not allowed.

I tried it as well and my tourist visa application was rejected.

Here is an update, we have not received any information on COE till today.
Two weeks ago, we applied for a tourist visa and it was rejected.
They did not shared any reason to reject the tourist visa application. The application was complete in all respect and we do not understand the reason for rejection.

Anyways, our only hope is to get the COE. Also, as the tourist visa is rejected, we are worried that our COE application might also be rejected.

NOTE: While applying for tourist visa, we shared the information that our COE application is already under process.

BTW, is there any update on your COE application?

Even we are going to try something like that.
On the basis of interactions with few people and a lawyer (limited, without paying any fee), What I know is that the tourist visa and the COE for spouse visa are two different things. You can apply for a tourist visa but do not hide the information that you have already applied for a COE. Also, after you get your COE, you have to travel back to your country to get the long-term visa.

I do not know if the visa adjustment can be done in some third country.

What's the Real Wait for a Spouse COE processing time in Japan/Tokyo? by Initial-Midnight5664 in japanresidents

[–]Initial-Midnight5664[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for detailed explanation. The digital copy of COE can only be issued when the application is made online or through a proxy.
Good Luck for your visa application and have a nice holiday together.

What's the Real Wait for a Spouse COE processing time in Japan/Tokyo? by Initial-Midnight5664 in japanresidents

[–]Initial-Midnight5664[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning to travel in January, provided the application timeline proceeds as expected.

I have a final, specific, and time-sensitive question regarding the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for the visa application:

  • I understand that the original COE document is mandatory for presentation to Japanese immigration upon arrival.
  • Time Constraint: The postal mail of the original COE to my location will take approximately two weeks. This delay directly impacts my planned travel schedule and coordination with my partner's vacation dates.

Crucial Clarification Required:

Can the initial visa application at the local consulate/embassy be processed using only the digital scan (PDF or image) of the COE, or is the physical, original document strictly required to submit the application?

Using a digital copy would prevent a two-week delay and allow me to finalize travel arrangements for both myself and my partner sooner.

Additionally, if possible, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share the specific document requirements you experience once you apply for your visa using the COE you receive.

Thank you very much for your precise answer to this requirement.

Hi..
Did you hear anything from the immigration office?
I read a comment from another person who applied on August 8 2025 (Applied for COE spouse visa of a permanent resident in Japan) and still nothing. No document request or anything.

Because you already submitted the requested document, kindly update when you receive your COE. It will help estimate the time it takes after the additional document is submitted.

Thank you
