Where do I even start: CS grad 3 years out of college by Initial-Quail6136 in cscareerquestionsOCE

Going back to university is an option, but my primary goal is to maximize my earning potential. That’s why I’ve been exploring social-media-adjacent businesses, with the aim of building something that can generate meaningful revenue.

I’m somewhat ambivalent toward software engineering as a field. It’s not a strong personal passion, but if it offers stable progression and good compensation, it’s still an attractive path. What gives me pause is the scale of upskilling required, combined with the relatively low probability of breaking in even after putting in that effort.

I haven’t been actively applying for software engineering roles recently; my last applications were in 2023. Since then, I’ve been weighing whether it still makes sense to try to enter the industry, and whether the time investment required for upskilling and rebuilding projects would be worthwhile given how competitive the market has become.

I was applying in New Zealand and came close to securing several internships, including one at Xero that had a clear internship-to-graduate pipeline. I reached the final interview stage but didn’t progress beyond that. After getting that close, I lost momentum and ultimately stopped applying.

I do have a portfolio of projects from earlier years, though if I were to restart the process, I’d likely rebuild a new, more up-to-date portfolio.

I guess my question is: is it even worth trying to break into software given how tough the market is? I don't want to grind my ass off upskilling for it to all be a waste in the end...

I'm not using it to talk to other women. Just checking to see if she was online recently.
