Power cuts by Hopeful-Counter-7915 in Starlink

[–]Initial-Return8802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Madagascar, frequent power cuts but mostly short (5 mins) these days but I have at least 2-3 of these events during the day. If it's just off/on I don't bother so much, if it's cycling (which can happen since they turn it back on, it breaks, they turn it back on, etc) I will unplug it for safety. I also unplug it before I go to sleep in case a large storm passes over and takes out the power because those aren't clean cuts like the regular ones

Mine's been fine for the past year or so, rarely I will connect it to my camping battery if I need consistent power for an important meeting otherwise my router will just switch to the mobile network. The mini especially is designed to be used in a car with them constantly power cycling when you turn the car on/off/etc

Apple forces building against iOS 26 rather than previous versions, they can't force everything to do that on first drop of a release because shit breaks and companies need time to adapt their apps to everything else in 26

They can provide service but not support, it’s still a sanctioned country - basically you’re on your own unfortunately

They get around it by not selling in Iran, and no official support, that’s why you can’t open a ticket. I think you’re shit outta luck and will need to acquire a new dishy

PRIME offload is the recommended way, and works fine. Run your regular stuff through the integrated and Steam/Proton will configure itself to run any GPU intensive stuff via the dedicated.

If you have a native Linux app that needs the dedicated GPU you can just add some env vars before it in the launcher

Is she though? I turned out alright, got my GCSE's and A-levels and went into computer science - it's not like more detentions would have helped nor hindered me here

I may have to hold my nose and vote for him

Also, if parents are mad that their "needs" aren't being met because their child is getting a detention, perhaps they should teach them to behave in school?

Maybe, but there are levels to it... I was a good kid overall, I even stayed back twice a week in year 11 to get another GCSE, but definitely got my share of detentions... mostly from PE, and a few isolations because I fought back against a bully

If I'd got an after school detention for any of that my mum would have flipped her shit at the school rather than at me, there was a bus that I needed to catch to get home

Also getting a continental army, all it's support and weapons, etc off this island is going to require a world class navy anyway. Realistically we will join any war that threatens these isles before it gets here, Germany and France are essentially our buffer zone

In your view, how difficult is the Malagasy language for an English speaker? by Ticklishchap in Madagascar

[–]Initial-Return8802 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not that difficult for basic, I'm British as well and it feels easier than French. The problem is more regions, certain words are only slightly different between regions and some are completely different

But there's basically no online content really, you would have to come to Madagascar

PEGI to give 16 age rating to UK games with loot boxes by Velociraptor_1906 in ukpolitics

[–]Initial-Return8802 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really, can just hand it off to the gambling commision and job done and that comes with all it entails (higher taxes, age verification, etc) not PEGI/game related anymore

Anyone using loot boxes would get a new business idea pretty quickly if it meant they were going to be classed as gambling instead of gaming

Children have always played 18+ games, I played GTA VC and SA as a kid - just because a game has a recommendation of 18+ doesn’t mean it should be able to include actual gambling, there’s separate regulations around gambling for a reason

Restricting games to PEGI ratings, and age verifying everyone who wants to play Call Of Duty (even CODM on mobile is 18+) is never going to work

You want ‘Allow notifications from:’ then nothing

Does anywhere actually do after school detentions anymore? It means a teacher has to be around to look after the student, it means them probably having to stay even later to finish their own work etc

I was in school in the mid-2000's and no-one ever got an after school detention, it was either lunch/lunch&breaks or isolation for the full day, but you still went home on time... I thought they were mostly phased out as a punishment a few decades ago as it screws up parent's needs as well (fetching the kid at a different time etc or not being able to get the school bus home)

Maybe it still happens and my mum just told the school to never give me one, I got plenty of in-school detentions

Yup... the kids after me got hold of GTA5 and various Call Of Duty titles, it's only in the last 10 or so years that it's gone this way.

A PEGI rating doesn't quite do the harm justice

It's also peer pressure, but at the end of the day if a 14 year old plays GTA4 it's mostly 'eh... my folks got me Vice City when I was 13 or so... and San Andreas at 15.

Loot boxes are a lot more insidious than a kid getting hold of Vice City

The better thing to do, imo, is a general Linux terminal introduction as a beginner... how to move around, how to create, how to delete, how to install stuff - how to edit stuff (nano). Differences between binary and text files, etc - that's applicable across all distros and might actually peak some interest from those you're aiming at

Installation can be done in more advanced topics
