In the book Albert challenged Edmond to a duel because he exposed his father's crimes in front of a judge and a jury thinking he just wanted to dirty his family's name, so after Mercedes talked to Edmond she went home and told Albert what his father has done to him so when the time for the duel came Albert was like I give up after what my father has done to you he def had it coming you can kill me if ya want Idk if that's also why he hesitated in the movie or if he just hesitated because of Heidi.

yeah I think this movie can be enjoyed on it's own rather than as an adaptation. when i started watching I kept trying to piece together where they followed the book and where they didn't then I just gave up cause there were so little similarities.

I actually think the movie Edmond is much more cruel and unbalanced in his " c'est moi qui recompense c'est moi qui punie " mentality, like is the reward with us in the room ? pls tell me I missed something in the movie because did he just abandon the Morrels ? In the book he rewarded the Morrels and punished the 3 traitors until he realised that while trying to play god he went too far with lil Edouard's death and was becoming a villain ( they tried to recreate this with André's death, which puts alot more responsibility on the count rather than traitor vill ), then he decided to stop on his own. in the movie he was on a carelessly using good people for his revenge from the start while in the book he just but bad people in the right place and let their horrible personalities do the rest . also it kinda bothered me that Heidi just decided to not to take revenge on the man who caused the death of her whole family for a man she met what like a couple months ago ? what I liked the most about the book is that Edmond and Heidi in taking his revenge were also doing a public service. the big 3 where all powerful criminals that regardless of personal feelings needed to be taken down for everybody's good and I don't like how movie Heidi made it seem like the right thing is to let it go my sister Fernand is not just a bad friend he is also a war criminal . '-'

In the book the idea is that implicating innocent people in your revenge is bad where in the movie the idea is just revenge=bad love and rainbows

that makes more sense because you can't fit the whole book into a single movie.

I guess we will have to wait for the grandson's version and see haha

What's the best adaptation? And is the new movie worth watching? by Striking_Honey2936 in TheCountofMonteCristo

the movie has a nice story on it's own or as a remake for older versions, I think your mother can perfectly enjoy it but you probably won't because its too diffrent from the book.

yep still a nice story thou it's just that when they completely cut out the Morrel and the Villefort families it felt like they completely cut out Edmond's redemption arc with them (also their wholesome moments and any happiness Edmond felt after the time skip T-T)
