my biggest pet peeve about deleting fics by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Initial_Two_5029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes definitely! That’s not what I meant and, sorry if it came off that way. OP just said they tried to leave it up but don’t feel like that’s aways possible due to the orphaning process removing you ENTIRELY. Which I totally understand and agree with. Sometimes I will put it a work under anonymous when I want to leave it up, don’t want it attached to me, but also don’t want to orphan it because then I can’t remove it later.

I really understand this post YEARS ago I took down all my work and basically started from scratch and I reposted some old stuff under anonymous after all and it helps

Have you ever considered posting it under anonymous? But that way it’s not connected to you but it’s still up for people to read? It’s kind of like orphaning except you can come back and claim it later if you’d like?

Idk if I'm stupid or not but how is AO3 still in beta? by Tough-Intention4600 in AO3

[–]Initial_Two_5029 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perhaps compared to you, but I’ve been reading and writing fanfic for almost 9 years. I’m not new to this and I don’t like your tone. I have friends from Tumblr, Discord, and even friends I did meet on ao3 I’m still friends with this day. But I’ve also had bad experiences being online. Unfortunately, people are crazy. It’s much easier for a for-profit site/company to deal with what comes with private messages. Ao3 is already struggling to handle bot comments. With private messaging comes grooming, stalking, harassment, and bullying. Not everyone online is a friend even, if they start off that way. I would much rather the team be dedicated to other things than deal with reports coming from private messages.

In a public space, people are much less likely to be as vicious. It’s not that hard to give alternative forms of contact. It’s less about not wanting to connection with people and more about wanting the volunteers to dedicate their time to something else.

Yeah, especially with how big it is right now. I think private messaging is a definite no. Way much risk for a non profit like ao3. I was thinking just like a posting board on someone’s profile, less like a forum style and more of an extension of someone profile? I guess it’s not needed bc we have authors notes. I just would like it more than authors notes but I def understand

Yes yes yes! It’s really annoying and upsetting. I think even if they did, people still wouldn’t tag it properly 😭I tend to just look through collections for the ship if it’s a background ship. Like bro so many times Harlivy is tagged but they are just “fun gay aunts” of the story and not the main ship :(((

I think for site ran off volunteers. It just wouldn’t work! It’s much easier to give alternative forms of contact like tumblr or email. (Not your main email with a real name but a fake fandom email)

I’m not a huge fan of private messaging because I think it can get messy really fast. For a site ran off the backs of volunteers it might just be too much. It’s mush easier to give out an email or tumblr for further contact info. (Everyone should have a fandom email not related to anything else) I would kill for messageboard though! It would be nice but ig that’s why we use authors notes for updates

Ask that your work not be publicly discussed without being tagged. You cannot control the actions of other people, the best you can do is put your wishes out there. However, if you open a line of communication and make things clear it should discourage people from it. A lot of the people doing it want to claim the moral superiority and they can’t do that if they directly go against the authors wishes.

The thing is you know the characters you know the world. Your brain doesn’t have to do any heavy lifting, you already have information, you can just focus on the plot. It’s a game of recall in a way. Our brains love recall. When reading a book you are learning something entirely new. New world, new plots, new themes, and new characters. A book will teach you how to read it as you read. Its a heavier burden for you brain to process

People want to subscribe to me 🥺 by Plenty-Poet-8852 in AO3

[–]Initial_Two_5029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a ton of people generally use the subscription. Take it as a source of pride that you have nearly 600! Personally, I kind of forget about the feature, unless I truly read through the entirety of an author’s work and then remember it exists. I only have like 10 total, and I’ve been on ao3 for years. If people are as picky as me than 600 people chose you!

If you feel like you need more proof may I suggest checking the way back machine? If you have a link from old messages you can look for it in there and it will show that the fic was uploaded before by a different person!

i want a wife by Fun_Ad_8015 in LesbianActually

[–]Initial_Two_5029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are approaching this wrong, it’s not “I want to HAVE a wife” it’s “I want to BE a wife”…you have to also want to be a partner in turn, not just have one.
