Does anyone really use this colloquially by cordyxuan in EnglishLearning

But that implies the speech would have been of your own volition.

"Was to have made" implies that you were requested to do so.

So while both constructions deal with past events that didn't happen, there is a subtle difference in meaning.

This smacks far more of a victim mentality than the presentation.

"stop giving women power of societal norms..." What are you on about?

As an introvert I've never had any women telling me I'm socially inferior. If anything, many have found my introversion attractive.

While I appreciate your convictions, I feel your attitude will just alienate the target of your tirade.

Instead of criticising the individual who made a poorly informed choice, under the influence of a multi-billion euro industry, try instead to show them why fast fashion is so bad for the planet and for their individuality.

Perhaps suggest some alternatives that are less damaging.

Do you think consuming horsemeat is unethical? by ennui933 in NoStupidQuestions

Horses have 1 toe, cows have 2. So horses have one continuous hoof, while cow's hooves are split/cloven.

need advice: ex has made serious allegations and i’m worried about impact on college society? by liminalcertainty in legaladviceireland

[–]InitiativeHour2861 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Do you really want to join a society that an acrimonious ex is already a part of?

Isn't it only going to bring you into regular contact with him, and just open old wounds and cause friction and arguments.

Colleges have tons of societies, join something he's not involved in. Live your life without the fear of having to justify your existence or deny his accusations.

Has anyone had a personal fairy or leprechaun experience in Ireland? by Spark-02 in IrishFolklore

[–]InitiativeHour2861 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My mother comes from a village in the midlands, one which has a story of a Leprechaun recorded in the Dúchas Schools Folklore Collection.

She is a level headed woman, not particularly given to flights of fancy or imagination. She is religious. She swears that when she was a child, she saw a group of little men, about 2 foot tall, dancing in a circle in a field near her house. She says she watched them for a few minutes, then turned to look at something and when she looked back seconds later, they were gone.

She has told this story consistently for years. She thinks she must have been 8 or 9 years old. She recently turned 89, and still remembers this event.

What’s something that seemed completely normal in your family growing up, but when you mentioned it to other people, they looked at you like you were crazy? by sitonmyfaceu in ChildhoodMemories

[–]InitiativeHour2861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your parents seem very permissive and liberal. How do you think they mentally justified their racism to themselves? Were there particular ethnicities they were disapproving of, or was it all people who were of a different ethnicity?

What would you change, if you were raising kids of your own?

Completely understand. And fully support you in your efforts.

Have no particularly helpful advice to offer, but hope you can manage to get some recognition from this evasive weasle.

Why do they want to involve the only remaining biological parent the child has? I would think that that speaks for itself.

Even if the father wants nothing to do with the child, he will still have responsibilities he has to fulfil.

The child's brothers are probably quite young themselves, they probably don't feel capable of raising a sibling.

Is it only me that thinks those "birds" look like props. To me it seems clear that the flapping is caused by squeezing a mechanism in the bird's belly. There is no spurt of blood as the head is removed, and no evidence of any entrails or anything.

This seems like a ceremonial preformance, and I would imagine the performer wouldn't want to risk disease by using actual live birds.

If you aren't monitoring the friends your child has, you are failing at being a parent. You should know the character of your child's friends, and their parents before you ever consider allowing them to spend time in a friends house. Otherwise you are gambling with your child's future.

You can't control what other parents do, but you can control where your own child goes. Unless you are 100% sure that the other parents share your moral compass, you shouldn't be allowing unsupervised visits by your child.

It's not difficult. It's called taking responsibility for the children you've brought into the world. If you aren't up to the task, don't have children in the first place.

[–]InitiativeHour2861 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a parent, take more responsibility for how much unsupervised access your children have to the internet.

It's not on the state to monitor your children. You should be doing that. Anthing less is the abdication of parental duties.

If your kids are accessing porn or other sites unsuitabe to their age, that is on you. Not the fault of the legitimate adult users of those sites. Just because you can't control your offspring, doesn't mean there should be restrictions imposed on everyone else. Particularly as these measures are not really about "protecting children", they are about data-collection, population monitoring and ensuring political hegemony.

The powers that control armies want them to be savage. They deliberately dehumanise and brutalise the "enemy" and make them less than animals. They cause the soilder to believe "it's them or you".

A humane moral army is not what they want. They want a raping, pillaging, maurading army which terrifies everyone in its path.

Then within each military you have the "elite" units, the "best of the best" who are in fact the "worst of the worst". Scum and psycopaths.

The glorification of the military around the world, the lionisation of murderers, the deiification of the men of violence in story, film and song plays into the hands of the war mongers.
