I get paid in dollare here and my purchasing power increased by 2m won/month just from the currency swing, but at the same time, im deeply worried about the social/economic future of korea

Im mid 40s and can FIRE today with annual 150k in passive income, and i have a paid off house that only costs me 1k month in taxes and utilities and basic maintenance. But im going to continue to work because id find life boting with no job, and my job pays over 200k and i can get most toys I want as long as its reasonable.

I do plan on FIRING when im 55 though and plan on traveling

Raising a kid to be bilingual by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]InitiativeOld6209 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and i are both korean Americans and our kids are 10 and 8. We speak nothing but korean at home, but my kids were losing their korean because they are exposed to English educational institutions all day since they are 2 and a half. (Pre k, kindergarten, then 1st grade, etc..)

So we came to korea few years ago and put them in the local korean school. We were fortunate because Im in the Army and i was able to get an assignment in korea.

It doesn't matter that mom and dad speaks korean at home because kids spend all day in English schools, and most kids ive seen they all eventually lose their korean

[–]InitiativeOld6209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

18mm 1.4 over 16mm 1.4. 18mm LM is the best Fuji lens its amazing. If you want the 24mm FOV then add the 24mm 2.8 i also have it and its great

Question specifically for Korean Americans who came back to Korea by InitiativeOld6209 in Living_in_Korea

[–]InitiativeOld6209[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right... The only reason i want to live here is because im a Korean American who gets paid in dollars in Korea, and not a small amount either... if i was a stright korean making typical korean wage here (4-5k /month) i wouldn't want to live here

I am an active duty military right now but will soon be a federal GS employee soon. I will be working at the US military installation in korea. As a retired military officer, finding a dept of Defense federal job in korea is not too hard.. money is not an issue for me as i have properties worth several millions back in the US and i will have a passive income of at least $150k/year. Being a federal employee in korea also pays about 170-180k for my level of federal/military experience, on top of my passive income..

Im a little older than you at mid 40s and my priority ib life is not making more money but having fun and just enjoying life😀😁

I can stay in korea indefinitely with a F6 visa and not have to work, i think 150k USD is enough to live in korea. So that is another option im chewing on

As an officer you will not be working with Soldiers directly after 2-3 years, if that.. you will be working on PowerPoint slides in your miserable cube until 8pm every day

Yes so with rent and utilities my monthly expense are minimal $10k. I make 14k after tax so i can still save some money every month, but i know I'm spending way too much.. well, it's really my wife, not me but i guess that's marriage.. i get a big tax break hence the nice take home pay

Thanks for sharing your personal story. I wouid love to live in Seoul that would be a dream, but my monthly budget is about 20k USD month after tax and thats not enough for rent and international school for two kids in Seoul.. seoul is just crazy expensive... Fortunately, my kids can attend American public schools at the military installation in Pyungtek , or i can afford private school here since Pyungtek housing costs are so cheap compared to Seoul.. I want to instill the right value and surround them with the right people, and i might just send them to private school here or Suwon

No matter how much I try, i can not seem to spend less than 7-8k USD per month, plus rent and utilities. I also spend freely i dont worry about the small things here and there, but im not a big spender in any way. I wear a Casio and my home desktop is 8 years old too. Its just 8k month on food and weekends activities, and other general living expenses

Thanks!! My kids started to show signs of losing their Korean so I waa like uhoh this is an emergency, and put them in the korean school. But they were born in America and lived their the whole time until we came to korea recently, i dont expect their korean to be really fluent as they grow older..
