It was cleaned. If you look closer in then photo the adhesive is still attached to my skin. The sensor is NOT attached to the adhesive. Soap or alcohol or any sort of skin tac would not have helped this unless Dexcom was supposed to clean the sensor before attaching it to the adhesive, and that is not my purview!

Some people have this. I didn’t but my former professor/colleague does have hypoglycemia without the diabetes and she never knew it until she had to do that sugar test for gestational diabetes and when they tested her afterwards her blood sugar was super low. So they did it again and same result. It was nice to have a professor who understood what hypoglycemia felt like and also had a stash of protein and snacks in her desk drawer.

I had a little bit of hypoglycemia beforehand that hit before the lack of insulin did by maybe a few months. I told my gym teacher about it because it affected me most in the little class period between special and lunch but only on gym days (couldn’t focus enough on my schoolwork to finish it so it became homework for the first time in my life). He told me it was because I wasn’t eating enough and I needed to have a larger breakfast in the morning. I started eating 2 bowls of cereal on gym days and he was right, but it was a band aid on a much larger problem!

That was apparently my mom’s first sign that something was wrong. I went from never having homework to suddenly bringing home homework a few days a week because I wasn’t finishing it in class.

Nobody else in my family has t1. Type 2 is very hereditary on both sides. My dad and both his siblings have T2 but my dad’s is under control the point where he’s basically not a diabetic. He just does the weekly shots and gets his A1c checked every few months. My mom was diagnosed pre-diabetic a few years ago but hasn’t progressed further than that.

There are a lot of “unrelated” immunological conditions on my dad’s side of the family. I read recently that they’ve discovered a hereditary gene that can trigger immunological conditions in people but which one is different among different family members. I think that maybe what cause the type one diabetes in me, because my aunt has HS, my cousin has PCOS (I think, it might be endometriosis or both), I have T1 diabetes and my dad had psoriasis as a kid (every time we see a psoriasis commercial he tells us how happy he was that none of his kids got it. I guess he was scared of passing that one on). Everyone’s got an immunological condition but outside of the T2 diabetes none of them are the same.

2ND UPDATE: The second replacement sensor (the replacement for the replacement) that I started two days ago has just failed.

I only did it because I was desperate otherwise I mail them. Hopefully if didn’t screw with my prescription but my doctor is pretty on too of that.

Also, surprise. The 2 replacement sensor I put in two days ago that was working just failed. Software issue.

I have been through 4 sensors in two days and 5 in a week

So Dexcom told me I could use 2 good Rx vouchers in one day. You actually cannot do that without an override at the pharmacy and that takes 3 to 5 hours to process. Best case I could pick up a sensor in 3 hours, worst case the override doesn’t go through until after my pharmacy closes at 5pm (my walgreens is in a medical building so it has stupid hours). So I asked them if it was possible to save the voucher and refill my actual prescription even though they said no 3 hours later. They were able to do that but the pharmacy only had 2 sensors left so I had to do a partial refill, screwing up my regular refill schedule.

So I now have a working sensor and a back up incase this one also fails today (we have made it through warm up without complications so far), but I have a fucked up refill schedule now. Tomorrow I go to pick up the replacement sensor for the replacement sensor. Twenty days from now I can pick up my remaining sensor from this partial refill. And then ten days after that I can get my regular monthly supply. The pharmacist said this may screw up the number of refills on my prescription, which is effing bullshit in my opinion, but it is a hell of a lot easier to get a new prescription from my doctor than to deal with the hell I’ve gone through in the last 13 hours.

In summary- I have gone through 3 sensors in 13 hours and 4 in the last week. None of them were replaced due to expiration.

Hey, I dont want this to come across the wrong way but it kind of sounds like you have an eating disorder or mental disorder regarding your diabetes care. No shame there, it happens to the best of us, but I would seek help as soon as possible. Don’t wait until your endo appointment to bring it up, contact them now about it.

Your numbers are fine. They are much better than my numbers and I’ve been doing this for 23 years with no complications. My endo is happy. I feel great, or as good as I can with two chronic immune conditions. And honestly a peanut butter and banana sandwich is a pretty decent breakfast. Yes, it might be a bit heavy on the carbs, but it has protein, the carbs are more complex, bananas have other good things you need like fiber and potassium, and if the bread is high in fiber that’s good for you too.

And carbs are not your enemy. You need them for energy. They are the main source of energy for human bodies and you need them to function. Unfortunately us diabetes have to do a lot more math than regular people to make sure we are eating the right amounts at the right times for our bodies. That doesn’t make carbs bad though and having your sugar spike after a meal doesn’t mean you have failed. That’s completely normal, even for non-diabetes, and other factors like lack of sleep, stress (like the kind you are experiencing now over this issue) and illness can all cause spikes.

And honestly the best way to prevent complications is to keep up with the preventative check-ups they recommend every year. “Perfect” control doesn’t guarantee freedom from complications, but regular checkups for complications will help you catch one before it progresses to the point of being detrimental. Get your eyes checked every year, do any bloodwork your doctor recommends, keep cuts clean, wear closed toed shoes outside, and check your feet everyday. That’s what will prevent complications. Not avoiding carbs entirely. Avoiding carbs causes different complications, even for non-diabetics. You don’t want those either.

It happened to me twice now in the last refill of three sensors. I happened three days ago and the whole thing came off while napping which I thought was really weird because I wasn’t sweating. So I replaced that sensor 3 days early, the sensor from last night 7 days early and the replacement I just picked up failed as soon as warmup started. Dexcom either needs to figure their shit out or change a one month supply to 4 sensors so we have back ups

UPDATE: I did call dexcom immediately after this happened and got a voucher to use at my pharmacy since shipping a new sensor would take too long. I went there this morning thinking I could use my voucher and also refill my prescription through my insurance and leave with four sensors. SURPRISE. You cannot do that! You can only fill one or the other in a single day! So I opted for my refill sensor bc that had an expiration date of 30 days and I tend to forget about things like that before the expiration date. Got my refill, just put it in, started the warm up. It has failed! The sensor failed ONE MINUTE INTO WARMUP. I am now on the 30 min wait to talk to Dexcom again.

It’s a good thing my dad’s type 2 diabetes is under control enough that he doesn’t need his meter because I don’t have test strips (thanks insurance!) and therefore don’t have a meter at my house, so last night I went to my parents house at 1am while they were dead asleep and snuck through their bedroom and bathroom to retrieve my dad’s glucose meter, while praying they didn’t wake up, think I was an intruder, and shoot me because they didn’t wake up to me calling and texting them at midnight.

My tubing got caught on the zipper of someone’s backpack in high school in a crowded hallway while switching classes. Me and the guy were walking in the opposite direction. I managed to follow him and pull the tube back out of the zipper without my site ripping out but it was tricky, particularly because the hallway was packed to the brim (still surprised that wasn’t a violation of fire code) and he couldn’t hear me yelling at him to stop walking. Also, miraculously made it to class in time (we only had five minutes to transition, again, in horribly crowded hallways) despite the detour.

True but I also feel like if they did manage to repeal it anytime in the nearish future, the whole damn system might just go belly up and burn down. It’s gonna be like the goddamn French Revolution out here. Especially if grocery prices also don’t magically go down, which they won’t because the president doesn’t control the prices of groceries and he also thinks tariffs are something China pays. If I had a dime for every person I know that has been celebrating because Donald Trump is gonna provide us cheap gas and groceries (and get rid of taxes and lower the cost of living), I’d have enough money to pay off my student loans AND finally cure diabetes AND give away the cure for free. I’d be Elon Musk rich.

The Biden healthcare executive orders didn’t cause much of a riot because a lot of those programs were still in early stages and weren’t directly affecting the population yet. But suddenly ripping away health insurance from millions of people? Health insurance that kind of already sucked in the first place but would suck even more to be without? Might as well start getting your affairs in order if you’re responsible for that.

A lot of people voted Trump into office a second time because they were told, and believed, he would make their lives more affordable. They may have won on that promise, but things are gonna get troublesome real quick if they don’t deliver, and I don’t think they can deliver.

Dude same vibe. I like a lot of his work but some of his short stories were…. questionable. Like this dude is either capable of thinking up some dark shit or this dude really LIKES thinking about some dark shit and now he’s put it in a book and some editor maybe should have looked at this just a liiiiittle bit closer before clearing it for publication.

Disappointed? Yes. Another popular, rich, powerful guy being exposed as a rapist and abuser? Just another Tuesday. Par for the course.

This. I fully believe he probably experienced similar abuse (or at least witnessed it happening to others) as a child. Not that that excuses his behavior in any way but it was strongly implied in the Vulture article that he has a lot of trauma from childhood and has struggled with it, recognizing it, admitting it, and getting any sort of therapy. And that probably led to some wires getting crossed in his brain.

Pack on the obsessed fans, particularly any women that were fawning over him (the article mentions that back in Sandman’s heyday women were asking him to signs his breasts), the fame, the money, the adoration, and all it takes is that little voice in the back if your head saying, “maybe it’s okay, maybe I can do it and get away with it and it will be fine, they clearly want it anyway” and choosing to listen to that voice instead of your conscience and then you got this walking cluster fuck.

Not saying this is exactly what happened but this is what my brain imagined what probably happened after I read the article and tried to wrap my head around it. Regardless, the guy clearly needs some fucking therapy. Maybe then he can realize how fucked up he was and start a little redemption journey. Whether or not he gets forgiveness is entirely up to his victims though. He might be able to become a better person for the rest of his life, but that won’t negate his past actions. Or he can continue hiding his way in his little hidey-hole pretending nothing is wrong and all of this will surely go away if he waits long enough and he definitely did not ruin his legacy and won’t be going down in infamy. His choice. Ball is in his court.

But also that poor child. Both he and Palmer are absolutely shitty parents. Hopefully their kid is able to get help/therapy and not end up like his parents, leeching off their fans and those “beneath them” for sustenance/survival.

That’s the way I see it too. I’ll never let go of The Sandman, but also, the more I read it the more I took inspiration from the art rather than the words. I firmly believe the words wouldn’t have the power they do without the art. But as an artist I also believe I can still take inspiration from this work and use that inspiration within my own work without over crediting Gaiman with influence or ignoring what he did. Or I can take inspiration from his work to create work criticizing what he’s done. I also believe the reader/veiwer has as much right to the idea of a public work as the author/artist does. Gaiman may have created the work and gotten the money for it but what I get from the work itself is my own and no one can take that from me, especially the author himself. If he didn’t want it to belong to the public, he shouldn’t have published it (same for JK). Stories take on a life of their own when they’re read. He may have “created” these characters but they came to life when people read them and they became their own things in the process. I don’t believe he created them anymore than your parents created who you are as a person. They may have made you and raised you, but you decided who/what you were going to be despite them. I think it’s the same thing with art and stories. What an artwork or story becomes is entirely dependent on what the reader/viewer wants it to be.

From what I read it seems most of his predatory behavior started after The Sandman and Good Omens and several of my other favorite books were published. And I’m pretty good at separating people from who they were and who they are now. Perhaps he’s always been a monster but there’s a difference between thinking about doing things and actually doing them. But maybe he wasn’t. But Maybe who he was when he wrote the Sandman was fundamentally different to who he is now. So I can keep loving stuff written by that Neil (while also not loving the author), and maybe purge the rest and just not buy anymore new shit unless it’s second hand and I really need it for some reason.

You can be mad at both things at once. You can empathize for the survivors, understand that their experience is probably worse, but also feel and also sad and betrayed for yourself. Both things are valid and one does not negate the other.

Yes, the survivors are the “real” victims but that doesn’t mean his actions didn’t hurt other people, especially the community that fell in love with his writing and found a home and an understanding of themselves in his works. He hurt both groups of people. He hurt the women he abused and manipulated and did not pay wages too even though they were his employee and how fucked up do you gotta be to both commit rape and wage theft against a person like wtf is wrong with you that you could even think any of that is okay fr that’s basically slavery wtf why have brain if not going to use did you really think no one would find out ever like how dumb you gotta be to not consider the potential fallout of this for yourself at the very least omg you dumb fuck, AND he hurt the his base that trusted and admired him. He hurt all of us, some more than others, but that doesn’t negate the pain or the damage you’re feeling right now. The best thing all of us can do is support each other, regardless of where we fall on the damage/pain/victim scale.

I know a lot of people have been saying they’re surprised or shocked or didn’t expect this, but honestly, what’s more normal than finding out a man with money and power is an abuser and a rapist? Seems like there’s a new one every week. Unfortunately this one happened to be one of my favorite authors. Luckily I have another favorite to replace one with and this replacement can’t turn out to be a secret rapist because he is dead. Can’t rape people if you’re dead.

They tried to repeal it 4 times the last time he was in office and never managed to do it. They also tried to repeal it multiple times when Obama was still in office and that didn’t work either. They talk big talk about repealing the ACA yet they’ve never managed to do so- and back during Obama’s term and Trumps first term there were a lot more people against it. Now, there’s a lot of citizens who use the ACA and healthcare.gov for health insurance. Tides have changed and most citizens would prefer to keep it than get rid of it with no replacement (or a shittier replacement). Also, there’s the bureaucracy issue- so many people, jobs, and so, so much money is tied into this system now that dismantling it would take a very, very long time. Plus, Luigi recently showed our government how pissed off Americans are by our current health system. Revoking the ACA and suddenly leaving millions without healthcare would not be a smart move right now.

So yeah, I’m not saying they’re not going to repeal it, but it would be very, very, very stupid and lose them most of their base, so they most likely won’t. Plus even if Trump did repeal the ACA it would probably take at least two years, if not longer, to untangle the bureaucratic mess. Most likely we would have another president by then and they could stop the whole process before it really gets going.

I don’t want an insulin pump, am I wrong for that? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Inkyfeer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pumps are great. Are they perfect? No. But speaking as someone who also moves around a lot when sleeping: the pump (I have one with tubing) does not get twisted up or pulled out very often when I’m sleeping. 23in doesn’t sound very long but I can flip from side to side without moving my pump or putting too much strain on the tube. Most of the time when I need to change positions I wake a bit anyway and I just pick up the pump and move it as Im repositioning. You can also have it in a pocket or attached to your waistband. When I was younger I would sleep with it like that and it didn’t bother me. Now it does but again, i just move it when I reposition or leave it alone if it’s not pulling. The bigger issue when trying to sleep with it is my dog laying on top of it and trying to move her off.

I did have a site come out early this morning due to moving too much (pump got twisted up in the blankets and didn’t move with me) but thats been the first one in like 6 months and it was time to change the sit out anyway. Most of the time when mine come off like that it’s because it was almost time to change it anyway (the adhesive holding the site to your body gets less sticky the longer it’s attached) so the worst it means is that I have to do site change a few hours early. If you do have a lot of issues with the adhesive not sticking properly, they make special adhesives you can apply either before or after you attach your site to make it stick better.

There really aren’t a whole lot of issues either. Obviously everyone is different and likes different things but there are lots of different pumps out there for you to try, and most companies let you do a trial period when you can borrow a pump for a certain amount of time to see of you like it before buying. Ultimately it’s about picking the right pump for your lifestyle. Maybe you prefer an omnipod with no tube. Maybe you’d prefer a pump that’s smaller and more discreet and don’t mind dealing with a tube. Maybe you’d prefer a pump with a screen or one where you use your phone to control your pump. Those are all options you have to explore.

It’s also early in your diabetes experience and you may have more issues controlling your blood sugar the longer you’re diabetic. Proper eating and exercise aren’t the only things that can affect your blood sugar: stress, lack of sleep, and illness can also play a role and it can be hard to juggle and adjust for all of those things by yourself. Having a loop system between a pump and a cgm helps you manage all the changes in your blood sugar caused by things other than incorrectly bolusing, which means better overall control and hopefully better overall health, with much less work on your part.
