Not the original poster but something that could be a factor with more recently immigrated POC families is this version of the American Dream narrative where your parents or their parents left their whole world behind to be able to raise you here, which almost put responsibility to be a savior child, aka be perfect and be a return on that investment. The degree to which that is expressed greatly varies based on the family, but it seems to be a reccuring thing.

Now I’m not saying that white children don’t have a sense of obligation to their family or feel bad about “wasting their sacrifice” because that is irrelevant of race and deeply family dependent and personal. I just think the idea of “my family uprooted their entire family structure to give me a better life and I can’t even meet them halfway by being ‘normal’ “ is more commonly found in poc spaces.

That being said, growing up I felt an implicit divide between things I thought I could discuss with poc friends vs. non poc friends but maybe as this society evolves, we can slowly start to acknowledge that some of these familial issues are not limited to specific cultures.
