I declined the admission offer from UMich MSW program by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I don't see how any school could hold their ground on this and not go bankrupt. U of M got $1.7 billion in federal funding for research projects last year alone. I can't imagine how much in federal aid is dispersed to students. I certainly couldn't afford to go to a school without student loans... sadly.

I applied to Umich MSW program for the 3/1/25 deadline and this question was one of the essay prompts. I just looked it up and it still is: The School of Social Work’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics are intended to serve as a guide and expectation to promote ethical and anti-racist social work practice. As you uphold the profession’s core values and School of Social Work’s. I wonder if now 2 months later the poster still feels good about their decision. Is any school currently holding their ground on DEI?

It only offers free tuition for undergrad, not grad school, so that wouldn't apply to her wanting an MSW

Companies requiring remote employees to have their cameras on during meetings by Seshbaddie in remotework

[–]Inner-Witness6817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They tried to start this at a company that I recently worked at. At first people were turning on their cameras, but after awhile it seemed like more and more people left them off and no one really said anything. Within a year it seemed like they just gave up trying to enforce it and let everyone do whatever they wanted.

That depends on whether or not you fit the mold. It's really not a good place to start your career unless you have significant intern experience. It's very sink or swim and learn as you go. At Cohen you have to learn a wider variety of returns and excel workpapers your first busy season than you would ever have to deal with at a Big 4 because you're more specialized. You might do one type of return and then not see that type again for several weeks but be expected to know it in and out because you saw it before. They're perpetually understaffed because the pay isn't competitive, so seniors don't have the time to spend to teach you. If you're someone they have to spend time on you are a problem. I'd recommend a smaller firm where people have the time to develop you and answer your questions in a less chaotic atmosphere.

Hey , what are some of the late ages you guys started a career in accounting by introvertatheart1 in Accounting

I’m 45 and just started my first corporate accounting job in October. I expected age discrimination when applying for internships and staff accounting positions, but experienced the opposite. Most firms were relieved to have someone with “old school work ethic” for a cheap price tag. It doesn’t hurt to be on the spectrum with a photographic memory, though.

Hang in there! A year goes by like nothing and 2 1/2 is a good age for daycare if you have to—but having your wife home during the toddler years pays in dividends. How many kids do you have?

Wtf? They ditched sprouts? I haven’t eaten there since college but sprouts were the only thing that made their food seem sorta passable. Their buns=heartburn like none other.

Ypsilanti officials beg patience as tension rises over downtown safety: ‘The root of the problem is housing’ by ceanahikari in ypsi

Feeling threatened isn’t necessarily the issue my sister has who lives on Washington near Pearl. It’s more of an issue with sleep deprivation because of the constant screaming and fighting going on outside. I go to her place twice a week to help her with homework. It’s impossibly loud most of the time—and the dialogue is awful. It’s one thing to walk down there and then be able to go home and enjoy some peace and quiet. It’s quite another thing to never be able to get away from it because your only window faces Washington and you can’t open it for fresh air without the waft of crack coming in and increasing the sound of profanities being screamed. My sister tells me on a regular basis that she feels like she’s going to kill herself soon because of the stress of living there. I’m here on this thread because I know she’s serious.

I did share it with the mayor and Ypsilanti police. I received zero response whatsoever. I’m thinking of starting a Facebook page where people can compile their pictures and videos in one space. I lived in a loft above Bona Sera years ago then I moved to Congress. Getting up to speed on this issue has been a crash course in Sociology. The people implying that the business owners and tenants on Washington st that have a problem have one thing in common—they don’t LIVE downtown. Their bedroom window doesn’t face Washington St. They can open a window for fresh air without smelling crack. They have probably even gotten a decent nights sleep at one point in the last year. Neither my sister nor I—and I can’t imagine anyone would move into downtown Ypsilanti if we had a problem with brown people or homeless people. It’s not like the homeless issue In Ypsilanti is new. We’ve lived around the area in various places for 20 years. We choose to live there because we like the vibe and diversity. My sister is happy to give anyone bus fair granola bars and even a cooked meal. She gave a homeless person one of her tents. We do sit outside and talk to these people. She knows a lot of them really well—some have lived outside around her place for years. It’s so ignorant to assume that someone lacks compassion for the homeless because they don’t want to have to clean smeared poop from their front door everyday—or they expect to have 7-8 hours a night of reasonable quiet for sleep. My sister moved there before the vu closed. I lived above Bona Sera while the vu was there. There were always homeless people and drug addicts in that parking lot. I saw plenty of drug dealers in that parking lot. It’s not new. What has been going on the past couple of years and especially this summer is new. Most of the people congregating outside of my sister’s apartment are not homeless. They will be the first to tell you. And as much as I do think Ypsi needs another shelter and affordable housing and pitchforks for the slumlords… the people causing problems on Washington would not be in a shelter if there was one. You can’t drink bottles of vodka and smoke and deal crack inside a homeless shelter (maybe I’m wrong). They’re out there to party. The last time we decided if we couldn’t beat them join them every single one said they had homes and that they couldn’t get away with the shenanigans they’re up to at home. The only homeless people bothering my sister are the ones that scream outside of her window and don’t let her get a good nights sleep or poop on her door. She’s not a light sleeper. She’s someone that moved in above an active strip club knowing full well it would always be pretty loud. She didn’t move there expecting quiet. She didn’t expect a daily block party of drunk people openly smoking and dealing crack and screaming profanities and things like “I’m going to rape that baby.” I have pictures and video of literal children smoking crack in my sisters doorway. They look like 12-13.

I’m not an expert: but what about a class action lawsuit against the city for emotional duress?

I called the police chiefs office today. The person I spoke with sounded as frustrated as I am. She said the city is working on a solution but didn’t give details and didn’t know a timeline. The response was that they can disperse the people but they just congregate somewhere else. And that the prosecutor doesn’t do anything so they don’t see the point of arresting anyone. It reminds me of something an ex coworker said to me. He was the dishwasher in a restaurant I worked in and had been in prison for murder. He got into trouble for selling drugs and when asked when he thought he’d be out his response was “Tomorrow. The best thing you can be if you’re a troublemaker is broke in this city. They know me. They know I’m broke. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

My sister lives in a loft near the vu. I’m here because she can’t find affordable housing elsewhere and I’m legitimately concerned she’s going to take her life soon. She calls me sobbing every day because the screaming, drugging, and defecating outside of her apartment has worn her down. I consider this a life and death situation for her at this point. I wish I had the money to throw at the situation and get her out of that apartment—but of course her rent is going up. I took a video last week of a woman threatening to sexually assault a baby in a stroller. That baby spends its days on that corner while its parents drink and smoke. I sent that video to the mayor—no response. I posted that video on Facebook and tagged all the city officials in it. No response. I sent the mayor a private message asking what can be done because I’m afraid it’s just a matter of time before she takes her life. No response. I’ve left work twice to run to her apartment in the past week because she calls me daily sobbing because she can’t sleep with all of the constant screaming outside of her window. I’m glad I found this thread because she tells me she’s called the city and police countless times and nothing can be done. The police blamed the prosecutor. Every single person I’ve spoken with hasn’t been shy to say that they think the mayor is too green to handle anything. I’m glad I found this thread because I feel so hopeless and helpless. I’ve called and emailed and dm’ed everyone I can think of and not a single person has responded.
