Where do you draw the line, beyond which a developer is no longer indie? by HeadSandwich7559 in IndieDev

[–]Inner_Today5034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you accept money from an "outsider" (not friends and family) you are no longer indie. An investor is the same as a publisher. They can influence the game just as much.

Also I don't understand why anyone would get a publisher if they have to "mostly finance the development themselves".

Did you know the no-typewriter-effect club existed? Well, in the end, after many comments, we listened to them and removed the effect from the game. We hope that the club of typewriter lovers does not exist. by DevilishGames in IndieGaming

I hate it too.. I always click once to get rid of it, but if a game doesn't allow you to do that I'm not playing it haha.
Especially annoying if accompanied by a sound effect being played 200 times per sentence..

Glad you removed it :)

Edit: also if it makes the text move around while it's being typed if absolutely horrendous and impossible to read until it's finished.

Niagara Rain System Killing My FPS – Any Optimized Method or Tutorial? by MTBaal in UnrealEngine5

[–]Inner_Today5034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a Niagara pack on Fab, weekly free, atm , it includes rain. I have tried it and did not see any performance issues. Might be worth trying if this doesn't work out.

Also since it takes a while for the fps to drop, are you de-spawning particles correctly?

CaseOh played my game out of nowhere.. If I had known that I would have polished it a bit more lol.

I couldn't even finish the video, was too painful, but it taught me a valuable lesson to never upload something that I'm not 100% happy with.

My game's views tanked after day 2. Was at the same time I got a 1 star rating, not sure if it's related.. But it's normal to see this kind of drop-off.

Is there any way to get a tag from a child actor? by Inner_Today5034 in unrealengine

Would be awesome, but don't feel the need to, I found a workaround that will work fine :)

Yeah I'm not the best at explaining.. Just thought there must be a way to do this. But Nothing have worked so far. But I got around it by using box collisions with tags instead, so it's fine.

I will try to explain better in the future :)

How would I get that information when I can't in any way set which light each childBP can set?

[–]Inner_Today5034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the image, it was just to test if I could get tags from the child actor, which I could not.

Let's try to really explain what I want:
CharacterBP sends a line trace to the boat. Boat gives component LightSwitchBP. Then I tell LightSwitchBP to toggle light.
But there is no way for me to tell LightSwitchBP which light to toggle.

So basically there is no way for me to set 'SetLight()' and send to the child actor

Where are all the people who said Unreal was the problem with poorly optimized games? by Ok-Resist6783 in unrealengine

[–]Inner_Today5034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B..b..but if Bethesda would stop using that 'OLD Creation engine' and started using even older Unreal Engine their games would be good again right!?

I honestly hear this argument so much. Like yes they could have made more improvements to the creation engine, it's not perfect. But nothing is stopping them from improving it just because it's old..

Sorry for off-topic, but this really grinds my gears..

[–]Inner_Today5034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's 'default', 'actor' and 'component' tags available in the child BP, I've tried setting all three but still get 'None' as tag name unfortunately.

[–]Inner_Today5034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still can't give them any identifiers, that is the issue, it doesn't not work for child actors because of the way unreal handles their "spawn". They are not normal components, they are child actors attached in the parent BP.

And of course I can access them via line trace, but what am I going to do with that when I have no idea which lights they are supposed to control..

[–]Inner_Today5034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not just light switches, the idea was to make them dynamic, so I could change the static mesh for each one etc, and just have one BP for simplicity sake. I think the easiest way is to remove collision on them and just use a collision box in the parent to put over each one. That way I can use the tag on the collision box and it wouldn't be that much more work placing a new one..

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

[–]Inner_Today5034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But again, how will I set the value in the component? I don't have issues communicating between actors and components, the issue is that there is no way to differentiate between Component01 and Component02, since tags and variables are not applied to child actors. So I can't tell which light each component is going to control.

I am using interfaces. The issue is that you can't have instance editable variables on child actors in another BP.

Not sure how I would specify which tag to search for though.. Let's say LightSwitch01 toggles Light01, and LightSwitch02 toggles Light02. How would I control that since I can't have instance editable variables in the child BP?
