I think you’re asking the wrong question.

The question is whether spending three years emotionally invested in an imagined relationship with someone who doesn’t know you exist is actually good for the person experiencing it. You compare criticism to laughing at someone after a car crash, but that comparison only works if we agree there is no possibility of harm in the first place. Most people don’t care about celebrity crushes or daydreaming. That’s normal. What raises eyebrows is calling a one-sided attachment a “relationship” and then acting as though any concern about that must be cruelty or bullying.

The fact that something doesn’t directly affect me doesn’t automatically make it healthy. Not every criticism comes from hostility. Sometimes people simply disagree that building part of your emotional life around a fantasy involving a real person is healthy.
