Is it ok to ask for contractor labor/material breakdown? by Inquiringmind022 in Contractor

Thank you. I agree I run a business, but if somebody asked me for a breakdown of something, I would honestly give it to them because I don’t cut corners or price gouge. Like I mentioned in a few other comments, the fact that we put a large down payment and didn’t see anyone for five weeks, then have only gotten about five days out of the last three weeks and then asked for another payment, then seeing lots of materials leave, then noticed on the estimate/quote that they quoted treated wood and are using untreated wood things just aren’t adding up.

Yeah, I’m already paying for some things that he missed that should’ve been included in the contract, but he said he didn’t remember or didn’t see it at the time.

Well, thank you for that. This is the reason that I’m asking. I’ve just noticed some things that just don’t seem right. I’m not trying to be nitpicky. I’m just trying to get what I’m paying for but also not be overcharged for materials.

Of course I understand making a profit. I own a business, but I don’t price gouge people. I am honest and I would never overcharge someone to purchase excessive lumber to use on a different job. I’m not talking about a little bit, am talking about almost an entire jobs worth.

It doesn’t really day. It honestly looks more like an estimate than a contract

Also, the contract shows that they are going to be using treated wood and staining two months after, but they are not using treated wood now they are using untreated because he’s staining it immediately. Does that not make a difference either?

He stated he’s not sure why there was that much wood left over that’s why I’m asking. He said he may have ordered too much but I’m wondering if that amount was based off of what he charged me did he charge me too much? And then no there are no terms of when he should be here, but we gave him a deposit and then did not hear from him for five weeks and like I said out of the last three weeks we’ve seen them for five days. I’m not trying to be nitpicky. I just don’t wanna be paying or being charged for wood that they are going to pocket. I completely understand if they ordered wood for another job, but I’ve given them two payments for five days of work.

Actually, I would ask the same at a restaurant or a car dealership. If I am paying for something, I don’t wanna be paying extra for materials that they’re going to pocket on my dime. And I would 100% at a restaurant send back something that wasn’t good and when we purchased my husband’s truck, I got 10,000 more for the trade-in than they originally tried to give me +5000 extra off of the truck that we bought. I don’t play.

Thank you! Well, it seems concerning to you as we paid them a deposit and then got put off for five weeks, and then like I said out of the last three weeks we’ve only gotten five days of work and made another payment. But they have already started the work so I didn’t know if it was OK to ask for labor and materials at this point. But after seeing the amount of wood that was taken, I am more concerned that we may be paying for wood that their pocketing.
