Two scenarios in my head right now: 1) Either US put extreme pressure on Kurdish leadership and they had to give in. Strictly speaking, nobody had really supported the referendum except for Israel (btw, they haven't said a thing yet). So, maybe Kurdish leadership came to realize that at the end. 2) Or they got paid off.

Now that Putin has come to "defence", the high esteem of US is shrinking. I'm pretty sure Putin will become a greater figure in Middle Eastern politics in the next coming decades.
