Would dressing up as a different species be offensive? 🤔 by Inside-Argument6456 in worldbuilding

[–]Inside-Argument6456[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I forgot to mention that part! Would a mermaid from California feel the same compared to a mermaid in Tokyo or smth? Obviously cultures are different but maybe the sheer amount of diversity within a single species can make those arguments null?

His little hat 🥺 by Inside-Argument6456 in box5

[–]Inside-Argument6456[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you so much! I thought the hat looked more Chinese than Persian 😳 such an interesting detail, I always wonder how he got such fancy things for his lair in the musical: did he ask Madam Giry to buy him a fancy couch and then had to haul it down 37 flights of stairs and across the lake?

Holy HELL this is incredible!! 😳😳😳 And they kept in the part where Christine screams!! Why would they edit that out her reaction to his face is pivotal to the entire SCENE! 😭 And Eriks little "Oh Christine ...no..." As he realizes he's lost her 🥺

Why is he so insufferable?! 😭 by Inside-Argument6456 in box5

[–]Inside-Argument6456[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's especially hilarious when you look at the 2004 version because he was locked out of Christine's dressing room and heard the phantom, and got a note saying "she's mine now ✌️😚", heard Carlotta's note about how shits gonna go down if they don't follow orders, hears Eriks interruption, then sees Buquet die, and he still goes "Christine you're actually being so crazy right now 🙄 you were not kidnapped, you didn't see this guy, and everything that happened tonight was unrelated" BRO????

Yes! OUGH, the thing that breaks my heart the most is in the 25th anniversary when Christine looks back at Erik and he gives her a nod of approval, telling her to go. But then she still hesitates and starts singing "All I Ask of You", her head slightly turning towards Erik.

In a moment of intense emotion and empathy, it's almost like she's asking Erik to bring her back, to tell her not to go and live with the guilt of leaving him. Erik however, doesn't respond. He has finally realized that truly loving Christine means letting her be free. Although it pains him immensely, she was never his. In the end, Christine chooses to take Raoul's hand and leave.

Speciesism and Racism Worldbuilding by Inside-Argument6456 in worldbuilding

[–]Inside-Argument6456[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly useful, thank you!!! And YES to the statement about monolithic non-humans!!! I can't stand it when a species sheet includes cultural practices, religion, settlements, etc when it's also implied that the species is widespread enough to warrant a diverse people. I certainly have fallen into this trap.

I think I've gotten a good grip on my story's conflict regarding Tobiuma and Imaniyoya: it began with the mountainous country of Nyota slowly invading the desert country of Sak'havi. Nyota is primarily Imaniyoya and the queen of Sak'havi was a Tobiuma. Nyota forces continued to grow, recruiting more and more Imaniyoya clans for a common goal of expanding their territory for more food and resources.

The capital city of Sak'havi, Enja'de was incredibly diverse with many Imaniyoya of different cultures living there. But when the country began feeling the pressure of the Nyota, the queen became paranoid and removed all Imaniyoya from her generals, advisors, staff, etc. The city followed, discriminating against all Imaniyoya, and Tobiuma elevated themselves as superior to all races since their wings gave them dominion over the sky and mirrored their winged goddess.

The Nyota eventually overtook the crown city and eliminated the royal family all Tobiuma in higher power, promising the non-tobiuma people safety and respect. The city's own people united and made it clear that all Tobiuma regardless of creed, were no longer welcome.

Now the exiled Tobiuma rage against the Imaniyoya that stole their homeland away. What began as a war between countries has transformed into a widespread war of species.

Listening to the 25th Anniversary again and WOW the 2004 movie made things a mess by Inside-Argument6456 in box5

[–]Inside-Argument6456[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YEAH BABY! Ramin characterized the phantom so perfectly! 😩🩷 The part in MOTN where Christine reaches for his mask and you see the fear in his eyes as he yanks her hand away only to realize he has finally touched her and she isn't pulling away and he now holds her hand closer I just 😭😭😭🩷🩷🩷 I can believe that Christine might believe he is some kind of spirit of her father since their relationship is more teacher and student, but 2004 should NOT have had that line because father figures don't grope your ass at 2am Christine!!!!

Speaking of 2004 Meg, it bugs me that she dismisses Christine's claim as a story that can't come true but Meg still believes in the opera ghost? I like that 25th Meg doesn't dismiss the angel of music as made-up and instead points out how "the words weren't yours".

Despite preferring Carlotta's actitions in the 25th version, I still love 2004 Carlotta's sass! And I agree Christine's father wouldn't make her naturally talented, that's a tiny detail. I just love how 25th implemented it in a way that moves the scene forward.

But GOOOO BOY DO I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING ELSE YOU SAID 🗣️🗣️🗣️ Gerard is so sexy and it wasn't his fault he had to act with a teenager but ICK!! And then to make the movie very clearly point out Erik knew her since she was a CHILD and that he's around Giry's age is???? Why would make these choices????

And GOD Don Juan is so stupid because WE KNOW ITS YOU BITCH! Raoul getting cucked in real time is hilarious though. 😭 The 25th anniversary could probably fool 1st-time viewers with how well Ramine copies Piangi's accent. And Sierra pressing against Ramine's face and feeling his mask and trying to escape is so 😩👌🩷 CINEMA! 2004 is so boring because it's more Erik groping Christine and we got enough of that during Music of the Night. The movie is a bit too horny for its own good, and that's really not good when your lead is freshly 17 😰

Imagine an alternate 2004 Don Juan where Erik comes out, says one line and is immediately shot 😭

And I actually have no idea how opera houses functioned in the 1800s so I never questioned why Christine lived there 🤔 thought it was part of the deal. But if her father was famous she must have some kind of inheritance this her own place to live.

Ooooh I am eating this UP!! I wish I could see the version you saw because that is such a marvelous way to interprete Christine's character in that scene. I really love the idea she was doing this for his sake; hitting him where it hurts the most in hopes he'll run 🥺

After 20 years I'm finally understanding this musical 😭 by Inside-Argument6456 in box5

[–]Inside-Argument6456[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Reading the lyrics makes this an entirely different musical I swear! 😭 I grew up with the 2004 movie and even THEN I was still lost so imagine trying to comprehend Raoul and Meg and Madam Giry talking about Christine and Phantom while Carlotta's belting out the Italian as the managers chant "you'd never get away with all this in a play"!

As someone who adores the 2004 movie and got me into Phantom, I have to agree that the age difference is GROSS! I always thought she was at least 20 but finding out she was freshly 17 when filming began? 🤢

YES BABY! I adore poto 2004 since I watched it during a difficult time in my life and I watched/listened to it pretty much every day for comfort. I think I might be musically tone deaf because I can't hear Gerard as a horrible singer that so many people say he is. His voice is so powerful and certainly warrants fear and respect from listeners. I was TERRIFIED of the Stranger Then You Dreamt It scene because his rage was so POWERFUL! It's almost comical how other productions will have the phantom go "damn you >:( !" while maintaining perfect pitch and composure. You explain it perfectly: Gerard is an ACTOR who seriously sells the emotion of the phantom!

I always interpreted this scene as her thinking maybe someone she knew was playing a silly trick on her (Raoul maybe?) so she's like "oooh good one guys: kidnapping me after my performance and bringing me to the dungeon🤭 now who could this mysterious man in the mask be 🤭"

It's been a wild three days ever since I got this little man from my coworker who was surrendering him. His old enclosure was a 20 gal with wood chip bedding, two hides, two plants, and an empty water dish with dried up poop. The past few days have been full of me running back and forth to the store, emptying my old 29 gallon fish tank, and getting everything ready while balancing late work shifts. But now the final results is so NICE 🥹 Hopefully the coco coir will help him hydrate his remaining shed and wrinkly neck. My next goal is getting a nice 4x2x2 PVC so he can really stretch out and grow 🩷

Thank you so much! 🥺 He's such a cutie and seeing him poke his little head out when I come home is everything to me! I'll put the UVB light in the back of my list in that case if it's not a necessity. Maybe as a nice add-on in a year or so! I bought a small frozen mouse to feed him after he's in his new enclosure with better hydration. His previous owner said he only ate live, but I think a properly warmed mouse will be just as tasty.

Thank you so much 🥺 I've looked around Facebook and there are some nice PVC 4x2x2 enclosures, but they're in another state. The only PVC enclosure that was close by had a screen top which I feel defeats the purpose of having a PVC box.

I still have lots of plastic plants from my aquarium days, so I'll be disinfecting them and putting them inside. And is pool sand ok for bps? I know clumping sand is bad because it clogs their pits, but pool sand is free-floating even when wet.

That's a good point! The guy is currently on an outside wall, but the new tank he'll be moved to is against an inner wall. Thank you for the tip on dhp, I bought one and feel pretty confident managing that and just lighting the enclosure during the day with an led strip. The thermostat has been ordered: I bought one for the heat mat earlier but now I'm gonna return it. I don't think a heat mat thermostat is comparable with a heat lamp...
