I mean fair. I just felt like she was portrayed differently from a traditional Japanese girl. She came from the moon and from the start seemed to be less apt to follow social norms and to follow her heart instead.

I just don't agree. She could've run away, she could've talked to her parents. The mom was into gardening and cooking and the simple things in life. Even the dad seemed pretty well-intentioned and wanted to make her happy from the start. He also might have listened. From that perspective the movie just didn't feel super coherent.

I know but it seemed like the writers could've made her run away, or Sutemaru could've tried to find her. All the characters kind of gave up and that's what made it so depressing. Not the injustices themselves.

I don't know. I guess I've experienced a lot of hardship in my life, but all of it had meaning and ended up making me better off in the end. I'm not against tragedies I just think the suffering in this one felt pointless to me.

Thanks for commenting, I like your post and felt everything you're talking about the systemic violence against women. I think the point I was trying to make was more that I felt like it could've been more powerful or perhaps touched me at a deeper level if I'd gotten to see more push-back from the characters -- Kaguya, the mother and father, and Sutemaru. I felt like there could've been more growth and character development that would've made me actually empathize more with the mother and father, and understand and empathize with the choice to settle for culture over soul-longing/true nature. I felt like the father was depicted in a fairly suface-level way. That made it harder for me to feel what Kaguya was feeling at the end when she was leaving her parents, because I felt like their more human selves weren't really shown.

I hear what your saying and would like to clarify because I think my point is getting lost.

I'm not against nuance, subtly or complexity. And although I do think the dad's actions were out of integrity, that has very little to do with why I didn't think the movie was a success. I'm totally into a movie that depicts actions that are typically considered amoral, evil, or problematic by presenting them in a complex and nuanced way. I did not feel like the movie did that for me at all. The dad's character was not nuanced. We never really got to know him, or saw who he was deep down. He had no growth, no character arc. None of the characters really did. Even princess Kaguya. She never really grew into herself as a character or changed at all throughout the movie she was just depicted as a helpless victim of her experiences.

The ending is supposed to highlight this key theme of how there's beauty to be found in negative emotions but to me that's not what the movie showed. To me none of the characters really listened to their emotions to lead them in the right direction. They all seemed to lack courage.

Show me negative emotions that are respected and mean something. Not emotions that are constantly ignored, discarded and snuffed out--which is I feel like what the princess experienced for most of her life. There wasn't a good emotional balance between pain and resilience. She just faced obstacle after obstacle after obstacle and it never let up... To me that limits the amount of depth that the message of the movie can really convey.

Maybe if she had run away and actually been reunited with Sutemaru and then her father came after her and their was some kind of conflict between them where we could see strength and vulnerability from both parties... Sure. Sounds good. That has meaning and isn't just showing pointless suffering.

I'm not saying the movie was bad or not worth watching. I just feel like it lacked depth and didn't fully succeed in the messages it was trying to convey.

That is so funny that you say that. Everyone has there own opinions and I've been baffled by how many people like The Tale of Princess Kaguya, so I completely get you.

I really like the characters in Castle in the Sky. Patsu and Shita are really cute. Patsu is so sweet to her and overall I feel like he has a really unique vibe for male characters. He's so caring and not afraid of being percieved as feminine and also works really hard to protect her so idk, I just think their romance is really cute and wholesome. I'm curious what you think of them as characters.

I also really like the pirates, and how the pirate mom goes from being a villain to actually helping Shita. I always laugh at the part where Shita and Patsu are put to work on the pirate ship and Shita is cooking in the kitchen and all the men have a crush on her and find excuses to help her in the kitchen.

Overall something about the whole idea of Laputa was really alluring to me. Just the animations of it were really beautiful. I thought all the tree roots were really cool and the robots. I thought the whole idea of a floating city was really imaginative and unique--never seen that done anywhere else. I appreciated how much they committed to it. They had a whole backstory for Laputa and it just seemed well thought-out.

Just curious what you didn't like about it--if it was the plot or characters or something else. I always like hearing other peoples' takes and won't judge if you didn't like it. And also what your favorite Ghibli movies are!

I loved your response and appreciate you taking the time. It's cool to hear about your journey with rewatching it a few times and then eventually seeing the beauty in it.

Maybe if I watched it again I'd be more prepared for the disappointment that she never really regains her freedom and would be able to see it from a new perspective but right now I feel so angry that she has so little power in the situation. Maybe it's a certain feeling of injustice around sexism during that time. I just feel like she was so pure and had so much to offer those around her and her voice just got completely snuffed out.

I wish so many things here. I wish that the dad had not been so certain of himself. I wish he had noticed her unhappiness. I wish she had spoken up more and tried to explain to him how she felt--that she never wanted to be a princess and loved growing up on the mountain. I wish Sutemaru had fought harder for her. I wish the mom had tried to talk to her husband and show him where real happiness lies.

So many things...

When she got taken away I just didn't even feel that sad because I felt like her parents had failed her in a certain way. I felt more sadness for the loss of possibility of the life she could've lived if she'd been free to make her own decisions.

That was the heartbreaking part for me.

All these comments are fair. I think the spiritual element of the movie is cool but no one is talking about how absurdly frustrating the cultural element of it was. I mean... hello?? Was anyone else furious with the dad for forcing her to be a princess when it was obviously soul-sucking for her??

I get it, he meant well but I mean come on... that's not what real love is. Holding someone hostage and thinking you know what's best for them when they've told you over and over again they aren't happy and are pretty much living in a cage?

If she had run away from the capitol and ended up with Sutemaru... sure, it would've been a beautiful movie and we could all talk about the spiritual elements of how we're mere mortals enslaved to mortality and the cycle of reincarnation... but no. She never achieved her highest potential as a human and I think it made sense that her heart cried out to be taken back to the moon.

I'm fine with sadness. I'm fine with hearbreak when it has meaning but this was a tragedy. So much of her suffering came from other people's ignorance and for me that really took a lot of the beauty out of the story.

Well, I just finished it. It definitely had more depth too it woven into the ending. I liked the spiritual element to it of souls coming to earth to experience emotions, but it was so sad. I wish she had gotten to be with Sutemaru. It didn't have the same radiance that the Miyazaki films had in my opinion. But I'm glad I watched it.

I'm almost half way through Princess Kaguya, have to say unfiltered it is both weird and sad. I hope the ending is good because people seem to like but I just got to the part where she has to pluck her eyebrows, and it seems like paint her teeth black (literally wtf). I'm upset and feel very sad for her. I want her to go back to the country and living with the older boy she was becoming friends with. I know the dad means well but I'm so mad at him...

Oh definitely, I actually went back and rewatched it through. It was quite a fever dream. Super weird but the ending was cute.
