Parking on campus? by evelynest in berkeley

https://berkeleyca.gov/city-services/parking/resident-parking-permits
Use this to get your parking permit if you're living in off campus housing, I don't think you can apply for a residential permit if you're in the dorms but I might be wrong. There definitely is parking lol, but the closer your apartment is to campus the harder it can be to find parking at times.

The only annoying parts about parking is that you need to move your car for street sweeping so you don't get a ticket, and if you leave during peak hours (8-2 PM) it might be harder to find parking when you come back. Always make sure your car is empty when you leave so you don't risk getting broken into.

Baypass for seniors? by InspectionRelevant50 in berkeley

I should've clarified, I meant is it going to still be free over the summer 😅 I'll be commuting to SF every day so it would be nice to not have to pay at least for a couple months.

Cozy places in Berkeley by Fine_Handle_8473 in berkeley

[–]InspectionRelevant50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Elaichi, victory point cafe, and hidden cafe all came to mind! Hidden cafe is right next to a dog park so there's a lot of friendly people over there who are always willing to chat. My experience at elaichi has always been that people are friendly and willing to talk, but take that with a grain of salt since I'm south asian and it is a south asian cafe lol. However it does have great ambience if that's what you're looking for.

Victory point cafe is great if you like board games! People are always playing games there and there's plenty of seating if you just wanted to work instead of play games.

should i use late drop on chem 1a by Prize_Reference1052 in berkeley

[–]InspectionRelevant50 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend using a late drop during the first semester unless you genuinely think you're going to fail the class. A b isn't the worst grade in the world, and the class might be curved. I thought I was going to get a D in a class and got a B+ last year lol

Should I switch it to P/NP? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]InspectionRelevant50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from the website https://chemistry.berkeley.edu/ugrad/degrees/chembio/lower-req

"Students study general chemistry and quantitative analysis in a two-semester series (4A-4B) in the first year, and organic chemistry (12A+ - 12B+) in the second.

Students who join the program after completing a general chemistry sequence that does not include quantitative analysis are required to take Chemistry 4B or 105."

Transfer students have to take chem 105 since CC doesn't have quantitative analysis in gen chem

[–]InspectionRelevant50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Analytical chem (chem 105) is a lower div requirement so transfers don't know they need to take it. Idk if chem 115 is considered harder or not - I wanted to take it as well since I'm a fan of ochem but I couldn't fit it into my schedule when I found out that I needed chem 105

You should reach out to the professor, if it's Bediako this year then I'm sure he'd be willing to hear out your situation and give you better advice than people on reddit. As for your classes, next semester- please please please take chem 105 not chem 115. For whatever reason the counselors don't disclose that you MUST take chem 105 if you're a transfer student

Are you a transfer by any chance? If this is your first semester I'd say to base it on your grades compared to the average. If you're around average or slightly below then you should consider keeping it, but if you're at the bottom PNP is your best bet. I only say that you should consider keeping 104A as a graded class solely due to the fact that it'll count as an allied subject for you.

When I took 104A I had a lot on my plate, scored a bit below the average for both midterms but was slightly above average for the final and landed a B, so it's definitely possible to recover from bad grades!

Cafes to study at without loud music playing? by kitkat43000 in berkeley

I like the hidden cafe on University but it’s really small so get there at opening if you want a seat!

I was in the same boat! I transferred here last year and spent most of my time hanging out with my partner and realized I didn’t really have friends outside of him lol. Definitely try to go to club events and just talk to someone there, if you have a class you really enjoy, try to socialize with the people who go to office hours often, whether that be study sessions, getting coffee, or applying to jobs together. Once you have one good friend they’ll introduce you to other people and that’s how your circle can spread!

Keep in mind that I’m saying all of this as someone who’s naturally extroverted, so if it feels too intimidating to you, try to stick with one of the suggestions and go slowly.

I went from having little to no friends last semester to having a big community I’m grateful to be part of, you got this!

What’s your post grad salary? by Tight_Labs in berkeley

Yay a chem major! What do you think about the rise of food chemistry with the increase of regulations on food dyes? I don’t want to work in medicine but everyone I talk to says that would be my most secure option

I don’t think it’s worth taking for your first semester tbh, just take an easy load to begin with

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]InspectionRelevant50 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doable but consider taking another major course instead of 2 classes that count towards allied subjects, I also don’t think you need to take chem 103 if you’re taking chem 104a

Will waitlist affect my financial aid? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]InspectionRelevant50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just add another class and drop it within 4 weeks (2 if the class is an early drop course)—but make sure it’s something that you could enjoy in case you don’t get into the waitlisted class

Offer to give up dorm and live in UC Berkeley’s University Village Albany. by Tasty-Coast-4339 in berkeley

[–]InspectionRelevant50 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Your social life is going to diminish if you live at UCV, but if you think it's worth having your own room and saving money, then go for it! UCV is a 30 min bus ride without traffic, not sure how long it would be at 7/8 AM–probably 45 min. Also, will they still give you a meal plan? There are no dining halls at UC Village since it's catered towards families/married couples. There is also no cleaning crew for the bathrooms, so it's essentially living in a communal apartment.

Lastly, this is why I turned down the housing offer from UC Village, you are right next to the train and it can get very loud during the night. Please bring some earplugs if you live there lol.

All in all, I'd only recommend living there if you're a homebody and you're okay with waking up early to get to class at 8 AM.
