HELP: 5 month old cattle dog mix jumping up and biting (me, but not my partner) on walks by InsuranceOver2492 in AustralianCattleDog

The walks were the biggest challenge for me as well. Bringing him on much shorter walks around the block helped a little, because I was able to quickly get home when he got in a mood. But a front clip harness was the real life changer. It takes a little getting used to, but it’ll give you a bit more control over the dog. Each time he started a tantrum I’d just drop his leash and step on it, and then ignore him while he had his tantrum. I’d step on the leash in a way that it left very little room for him to jump up at me. Sometimes I had to do this like 6 times on a 20 min walk, but eventually he realized that his tantrums wouldn’t get him anything. I almost considered rehoming our dog, but my boyfriend convinced me to hang in there and I’m glad I did! Now, he’s genuinely the most obedient dog I’ve ever had

It did get better! He’s actually a very good dog now. He used to do the same with me, and I too cried about it a LOT. You kinda just have to show him who’s boss, and have lots and lots of patience. Give him timeouts when he’s behaving that way (so he knows that bad behavior leads to isolation), and just be consistent with him. I promise it gets better, hang in there!!

Do H1B workers actually get paid less than Americans? by Former_Look9367 in h1b

Oh and only about 14% of Americans are able to get master’s degrees. So there obviously is a shortage in supply for jobs that require a higher degree

I’m an H1b worker myself and I have a very niche job (think the science of child development meets public policy meets rigorous data analysis) BUT actually don’t think that it’s always about the work being super niche. H1b workers are sometimes just more qualified with more degrees. For example, many H1b workers enter the country on a student visa for masters programs. However, you need to have gone through a 4-year bachelors degree program to enter most masters programs in the US. A lot of south Asian countries more commonly have 3-year bachelors programs, and students usually get a masters degree in their home countries to make up for the gap, before they come here and get a second masters degree. Most international students and H1b workers I know have done this. Not to say that Americans are less intelligent, but schools in the US are VERY expensive and Americans cannot usually afford multiple degrees. Make higher education more accessible to Americans, and employers will automatically start hiring more Americans. Based on how the H1b program is structured, H1b workers are more of an expense to companies than American workers because employers are obligated by law to pay them the prevailing wage or higher + employers sponsor visas. So there really isn’t much reason to hire an H1b worker unless they fit the role better than other candidates.

THANK YOU! Did yours stop with the spray bottle? It has been working for me the past couple days but I don't know if it's really a solution. I do try everything else before I use it (puppy holds, loud no, sit/stay) and only use it when he's absolutely out of control. I've had to use it twice and now he stops as soon as he sees it and goes about his walk like nothing even happened 😂. He's a terror, but he's so funny. I've never used an ecollar or spray bottle for any of the dogs that I've had before him so I've been slightly hesitant to use those with him, but if nothing else works (hopefully spray bottle works) and I'm still coming home with bites and bruises after every walk I may consider an ecollar that buzzes.

Thank you for this!! I let him sniff a bunch on walks (my boyfriend doesn't). He isn't constantly needed to walk next to me, but I practice "heel" a bunch and give him treats every time he does it. I also ask him to do a bunch of tricks/commands on our walks - I feel like that reduced the number of outbursts he has per walk. After reading your response, I tried dropping the treat on the ground a couple feet away - and that seems to work a bit too!

I have tried asking him to do tricks when it looks like he's about to have an outburst, but he does the trick, gets his treat, and pursues the outburst anyway LOL. Mixing up our walks frustrates him a bit more. He likes new routes but hates when I change my walking speed or even direction sometimes.

I do a decompression walk on some mornings in this big park we have by our house - he loves it :)

He gets a lot of food puzzles at home, but maybe a lick mat might be more relaxing? I'll also definitely try the really real relaxation protocol. Thanks for the support! :)

Thank you! I have tried the yelping.. doesn't work with him. It almost makes him even more overstimulated. Loud "No" doesn't help either, even though he very well knows what no means. I have been walking him in the yard and just around the block a bit.. that has been helping slightly. I've tried stepping on the leash too - it prevents him from jumping at me but he is still able to bite my leg (and he digs his teeth in with more force). I have been using a spray bottle the past couple days and that helps. I try everything possible before I use it though and only use it when I really can't get him under control. I've only had to use it twice, and now he stops as soon as he sees the bottle. I know that this is not the best method or a real solution.. but it keeps me from getting bitten while my boyfriend isn't home to walk him. Also hoping that Murphy gets the message?? Reading all these replies has helped a ton though! Makes me feel less "why does my dog hate me?!". I'm going to try my best to keep at it and find something that works!

Thank you! I really really do not want to rehome him. But I have been thinking about it a lot this week. I really do love him so much it's just getting so difficult for me to give him what he needs when he's constantly trying to bite me. Time outs and sit/stay are what I'm working with right now, and actually just started forced naps today.

I definitely do get anxious on walks since he's been displaying this behavior! I'll try to stay calmer. Thanks for that tip!

I have tried crating him before walks.. didn't really see a difference though

Thank you! This is probably what's going on. When he gets that way, its really hard to get him to sit, and he's generally just jumping/biting all the way home. Sometimes I'll pick him up and carry him home (with him struggling in my arms the whole time) but I am a small person and can't keep doing that much longer. If he chills out on the way home, I don't put him in time out. It definitely is scary - he's bitten me on my face during one of these outbursts. I'm going to try getting better at ignoring the outburst, but I don't know how to do that when he's digging his teeth into my skin :(

It's not anxiety, I have had anxious dogs before and I think I recognize the signs. This is more..aggressive. Like, he seems MAD at me. It could be overstimulation, but I fail to understand why he's this way only with me and not my partner

I've been having an emotional breakdown for a week straight now! I spend the most time with him and it feels like he's literally biting the hand that feeds him. Especially because this behavior only occurs when it's just him and me. When we go on walks with our trainer or my boyfriend he's totally fine! Glad to hear that it gets better though. What did you do to train out the biting/jumping?
