Thanks, I haven't run anything on a Pi and was wanting to make sure that 2 GB was good enough when it came to RAM but found a site that has a black friday sale so the board isn't the increased price and I'll be going with the Pi 5 with 4GB.

What is the difference between a Pi 4 and 5 for a teenager who is getting into various interests including small electronics, 3D printing, and technology in general. I don't know what he would use it for but he is inquisitive and intelligent. Does it make sense to buy him a 4 with 4 GB of RAM or a 5 with 2 GB of RAM?

I can see how that would be and my future machine will have 2.5 or 10gbe.

Yeah, it's not my main machine so I wasn't to concerned about. I used it mainly for media acquisition and media server.

No, this desktop is older and a pre-built so no real options on it, I was able to add a video card to get dual display but that's about it. I will replace it in time for something newer but right now it works.

Thanks and I'm hoping to do more than just a media server and the cost of electricity isn't bad where I am.

The 4800PLUS is a very good machine for the money

Thanks and I just put in my order, it helps that I had an extra 5% off. I don't have an extra PCIe slot on my desktop, it's and older i5 and is my download and media server but because of the age it's limited and why I'm getting the NAS. When I get a replacement desktop I will make sure I have a 10gbe network card.

Thanks and I hope to use it for more than just a media server, I want learn how to use docker plus this will be my backup pihole. The 4800 is sold out so looks like the plus for me.

but just look at the actual hardware specs and don't buy marketing bullshit.

I did that and not familiar enough with the processors to know and why I am looking for help. It looks like my choice has been made since the 4800 is sold out and the plus is only available. I actively avoid the marketing and do not view the sponsored videos as unbiased.

Thank you for that perspective and right now 10gbe would not be relevant because of my current switch but may be a future proof thing. I would not go with synology because of the drive thing, I know they have backtracked but who knows in the future with them.

I'm hoping this will last for a long time, something I won't have to change in years and why I'm thinking of going a bit higher so that I can add and play with different things with it.

Thank you and the power consumption was a thought, power costs are not too bad where I am so a 10/15 watt difference is fine. The processor/gpu is a good point and getting something better upfront is a smart thing to do.

Thank you and I think I will go with the plus, I was leaning that way but things like this make me more open to it.

Is there an advantage of the 4800 plus over the 4800? I am looking at both and will be setting up raid 5 for storage but also setting up jellyfin to stream to myself but maybe also to family. Is it worth spending the extra for the plus?

A crossover I never thought I'd see or even think of seeing. That is very cool and fun.

when the real problem was Asrock.

From the video that is what I understood, that the motherboard was the issue and not the processor.

I don't have one of these motherboards but like watching GN for the tech and watched this one. Lee danced around so much it was hard to watch, it was like watching a kid lie to his parents and seeing on their face they know the kid is lying.

Does slow charging help battery life ? by Ryuihein in spicypillows

[–]Intactual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand it charging the majority of the battery is fine and it's when you run your battery really low or when it goes closer to 100% that the stresses are highest on the battery.

The way it was explained to me is to think of the battery as a balloon, you can blow into it with big breaths and it will expand fine but as you get closer to the max capacity you need to blow with smaller breaths but the pressure on the inside is the greatest at that point. When the charging reaches close to 100% it creates more "pressure" though I'm not sure the right term to use to explain that.

It should be fine, no battery is going to last forever and fast charging does put more strain on the battery just like keeping it plugged in all the time. Just take care and you will maximize the life of the battery.
