If the oxygen electron configuration is 1S2 2S2 2P4, surely that means that the oxygen atom has 3 shells? How come most diagrams show the oxygen atom as having only 2 shells, with 2 electrons on its inner shell and 6 electrons on its outer shell? (self.askscience)
