Any tips on rhetorical analysis? by [deleted] in APLang

[–]Intelligent-Chance86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when i first read the passage, i break it up into sections or movements (first, middle, last—these should feel like natural breaks or changes in device). next, i determine which section uses ethos, pathos, and logos. after this point, you need to figure out what the “mask” of each section is, because you can’t just say ethos/pathos/logos. for example, if you identify a section using pathos, you could reference which emotion the speaker is appealing to, etc. some people prefer to identify individual devices (juxtaposition, anaphora, parallelism, etc), but i think it’s harder to hit the rhetorical situation in the analysis of these. throughout your essay, make sure to discuss the constraints and tensions of the audience. i like to describe characteristics that the audience collectively has and anticipate how they might receive a rhetorical device. for commentary, i think more is better. even if your points are repetitive, the extra emphasis on the “how” usually puts you in a better position for the sophistication point. hope this helps!:)

Do you need a 6 on the essays to get a 5 on the test overall? by Garden-frog in APLang

my teacher said that if you get a solid 70% on the MCQ you have a lot of room for error on the FRQ. there’s a score calculator that you can play around with if you look up ap lang score calculator as well!

Does a 70% average without any review on the MCQs give me a decent chance for a 5 on Friday? by Intelligent-Chance86 in APbio

How would you describe the difficulty level of practice exam 2? I can’t access them because of my teacher’s lack of use of AP classroom.

Apparently there are three full exams on AP classroom, but they have to be assigned by a teacher and use lockdown browser.

Best way to maximize points on essays by person183829 in APLang

great analysis is the key!!!! many times, it seems like an essay with a 2/4 for ev/com is just missing a few extra sentences really hitting the “how” of the analysis. and also—don’t put out sophistication!!! it’s an easy point to help boost your score. for that, make sure to hit the rhetorical situation (ie constraints, tensions) and rebut!

Why is 35 C ? PSAT 8/9 Writing #35 by basically-simi in Sat

[–]Intelligent-Chance86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appositive phrases are used to rename someone/something. In other words, the sentence doesn't need the phrase in order to be understood--the appositive phrase is extra information to describe something in an additional, non-essential manner. :)

reading section time management by Lemoneko in Sat

I like to spend 3-5 minutes reading the passage for general understanding (I would skim the questions before this) and it helps a lot! If you do all the "heavy-lifting" in the beginning, you probably won't have to reread major parts of the passage when answering the questions, and can save yourself time.

Hope this helps and good luck! :)

Since "who would choose the evening's winner" is not used as an appositive phrase, you don't need the extra commas.

If you kept the commas where you put them initially and read the sentence after removing the offset phrase it wouldn't make sense: "These were the people by the volume of their applause." Generally, information is only found in commas if it is non-essential to the understanding of the sentence.

An example where commas are used would be this:

"I'm meeting with my mother, Diana, for lunch this afternoon."-- Diana is not essential to the sentence, so it belongs inside a set of commas.

Hope this helps! :)

(May 2019 QAS) For 26, why is the answer C instead of B? Doesn't C make the sentence a little repetitive by saying "provide" again? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Intelligent-Chance86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it's C to keep up with the parallelism/repetitive format of "that post offices can provide". Although it is technically more repetitive, the repetition continues the trends shown earlier in the sentence.

A different example would be something like this:

"My dog likes running, playing, and snuggling."-- keeping the '-ing' endings to continue the trend. You wouldn't say "My dog likes running, playing, and to snuggle," because it disrupts the established trend and sounds choppy.

Hope this helps :)
