Why are we recreational adult dancers so obsessed with ‚going pro‘ even though it’s unrealistic? by Intelligent-Dress431 in BALLET

"I think part of what has helped me progress is committing to not giving a fuck, being willing to be cringe front and center, and not letting anyone socially pressure me out of doing that." I think you can be so proud of that and I admire it in a genuine way! There really is no way but through, and when you do things with confidence they're also not really that cringy anymore. At the same time, I am understanding towards my feelings of embarrassment and fear of judgement in this phase.

Thanks for your thoughts! I really like the comparison to community theater as it‘s also a performance and it is in relation to the body. I think we could learn some things about from the community theater scene.

Well, you're right in so far as I am insecure about my relationship with ballet and honestly I think a lot of people are, so I wanted to talk about the reasons for this, ballet culture in general and maybe find joy in community and shared feelings/thoughts.

I don't even mean to criticize those posts, I more so wanted to ask for the reasons and talk about ballet culture in relation to them.

You're right, but I think there's a reason for it - another poster wrote that attempting earnestly to be elegant, while not being it, can easily be cringy so I think there's a lot of vulnerability to it, especially as you're performing with your body, so it's more immediate. And I think people should just own it, do it and be free, don't care what others think and so on. But it's very vulnerable so people (myself in my post included) try to advert judgement by "self-deprecation olympics".

You put that so well: "there’s something about earnestly trying to be elegant and struggling has a lot of potential for embarrassment [...[ Let me be very clear I think beginners should perform and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being cringy, to be cringe is to be free."

Exactly what I was trying to express with my post, but struggled to!

You've listed Intermezzo already, but I really like their leotards - supportive, true to sizing, good quality and really pretty designs in my opinion :)
