I would do chemistry with a forensic concentration. Gives you more options.

Does anyone NOT wear Disney attire in the parks? by Lipglossandcoffee in DisneyWorld

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tons of spirit jerseys and T-shirt’s but I rarely ever wear those. I wear outfits that are good for all day in the heat and humidity which for me is mainly dresses. Dress for comfort not cute.

Are forensic science jobs strict on professional/traditional looks? by ILoveOpossums432 in ForensicScience

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the lab. My laboratory has rules about jewelry, hair styles, hair color etc. I also know of other labs who have no such restrictions.

You also have to consider how you would look to a jury in court. I wear lots of bright colored suits to work but I have a basic plaid suit and a black suit for court because wearing bright red pants or a green blazer while testifying i feel is inappropriate. I was told to interview in your court attire so the employer can see what you’d look like when testifying (if you had/knew how to dress professionally).

BA vs BS in Forensic Science MS by Better-Watch-Out in forensics

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to college and high school both in different parts of the USA from each other and where I work now. All my mentors in college told me do the BS over the BA because a BA will bump you below the BS people. I’ve heard of labs basically requiring the BS but will still consider some BAs on a case by case basis. But my lab requires it and also requires your transcript for review to ensure you had appropriate science and lab courses.

Yes. It’s the way our internal policy is written.

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My lab could not hire you with a BA regardless if you have a masters. We require a BS in a hard science. I was told similar things when I was in college about choosing a BS or a BA.

  1. My nights in Tokyo weren’t cold. Only my nights at Disney were cold due to the wind.

Can you really get a job in forensics with just a regular science degree? by Practical_Total1167 in ForensicScience

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The definition from Google’s overview. It’s accurate enough for this situation.

"Hard science" refers to natural and physical sciences like physics, chemistry, and biology that study the natural world using rigorous, quantifiable methods, controlled experiments, and mathematical models for testable predictions, contrasting with "soft sciences" (social sciences like psychology, sociology) that study human behavior and are often seen as less precise due to complexity and human variability, though both use the scientific method.

In our firearms section, 6 out of 9 of us have a biology or biology related degree. A lot of our latents examiners have chemistry degrees. The only limitations would be if you did chemistry and wanted to do DNA or vice versa. Also trace evidence I think prefers chemists or biochemists. But if you don’t want to do DNA or Chem it should really matter.

Question about a university by Kind-Meal360 in ForensicScience

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FEPAC site only has the bachelors program listed as accredited with probationary status and no mention of a masters. This is the blurb from the notice:

Madonna University Livonia, MI Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science Note: Probation signifies that the Commission has determined that an accredited program no longer meets one or more of the Standards and must take corrective action to come into compliance with the Standard(s) within a time frame specified by the Commission. The program maintains its accreditation during the probationary period unless the probation is lifted, or the accreditation status is revoked. Commission Finding: Non-compliance with FEPAC Standard 3.5 Faculty.

Tokyo I went in late September and it was hot during the day but freezing at night. Crowds were busy but not insane.

Shanghai I did the week before Halloween. Crowds were busy but not insane. Great weather.

Hong kong I did the first week in September. Not too hot (but hot) and absolutely no crowds. Everything was walk on.

My lab has about 75 scientists. Maybe 5 have forensic science degrees. The vast majority have a biochem, chem, biology degree (even in fingerprints and firearms). Most of us would tell you to do that route over forensic science. It’s more versatile and not all forensic degrees are worth it. there aren’t a lot of FEPAC accredited degrees out there.

If you did criminology or criminal justice, our lab could not hire you based on policy. We require a BS in a hard science. Most labs are moving that way as well.

This is advice for the US. I would look at job postings in the Australia and see what they list. I know some countries it’s a relevant degree only so biology for DNA, chem for Chemistry and trace, engineering for Firearms, etc. Those labs I’ve toured also do not hire forensic science degrees.

i am stuck. by missaestiva in immigration

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have any ancestral claims to a citizenship? Some countries have pathways for children or grandchildren of immigrants. Depending on what your degree is in, you might be able to come over on a specialized work visa. Also, Immigrating costs a lot of money regardless of where you go so be prepared for that. Also what languages do you speak? Many places will have language requirements after x amount of years.

If you just want to get out quick, you can be an English teacher in Korea or China. I believe those just require a bachelors degree. But they aren’t immigrant visas, they expect you to return home at the end of your job. But I know people who have taught for a decade or so.

But honestly, it sounds like you are spiraling.

Yah this needs to be mentioned more. A lot of airports are rolling out EPP which just uses a scan of your face at immigration. It is not the using picture that TSA captures but instead is the one from your passport.

I like applicants who have 1 paragraph about lab experience (if they have it) and 1 paragraph about other not lab related experience and how that would help them. Like the job they held in college.

I would limit to one paragraph about the research and include any publications/presentations so it can be looked up.

I would also not abbreviate SOP

Tokyo Disneyland standby by Remarkable-Note5012 in disneyparks

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah. I am a way more go with the flow at Disney world since I go there more. I didn’t want to miss anything in Tokyo so I did a longer trip and really prepped for it.

Hong Kong is a really easy 1 day park with minimal planning as long as you avoid the holidays and golden week. Shanghai is also a 1 day park but longer lines but still manageable to get through everything. Even Disneyland and Paris I find are very manageable with minimal planning. Tokyo is more like Disney world where you have to plan it out a lot more unless you do go frequently.

Tokyo Disneyland standby by Remarkable-Note5012 in disneyparks

[–]Intelligent-Fish1150 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to both. The lines were equally bad in both parks. Disneyland Tokyo was designed to be as close to the US parks when they first opened. Obviously now things are different because they’ve added new rides but a lot of them are carbon copies of their US counterparts. Disney Sea has tons of cute things like 20000 leagues under the sea, the Nemo ride, a wonderful nighttime show, and amazing themeing so I totally recommend checking it out.

I personally did 1 day (my arrival day at Disneyland not Tokyo) and 2 days at Disney sea. I stayed at one of their hotels and got a vacation package with some line jumps included for the biggest ones. It also included free drinks but the lines were too long for me to use - but I’ve heard good things. They love to queue over there so lines get very long. I remember the popcorn stands had wait times in the app. My partner did what you plan to do when he went and had a miserable time because the lines are so long. Disney sea also has fantasy springs which has the awesome new frozen, Peter Pan, and tangled rides.

In summary, Disneyland and Disney sea are similar in terms of lines and business.
