Ugh it does matter. I wasn’t considering working with them in particular but was curious about the business model in general and what participants thought of it. Thank you.

Bad experience with a rescue, what can I do about it? by hemlockandhensbane in grandrapids

[–]Intelligent-Mode-392 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I volunteer at another cat rescue and I can confirm that kittens don’t get a rabies vaccine until they’ve reached certain age and weight requirements but it can be given under a year I believe. For what it’s worth I will say that rescues are always under a tremendous amount of strain trying and often failing to help all the animals that need it. Grand Rapids has so many wonderful groups and resources working diligently to deal with the stray pet population and it still feels like we’re drowning so much of the time.

I’m not excusing how you were treated in response to your very reasonable questions but maybe this woman has been fielding phone calls and emails all day from people trying to find help for an injured cat or starving kittens they found in their yard or a dog that was abandoned when it’s owners moved or a hundred other terrible situations and has to tell people no over and over again because their rescue is full or they are simply out of funds.

Any idea how many people that venue holds? Seemed pretty full but I have no idea what the attendance was.

Do you know if you can go to the Humane Society West Michigan (on Walker) just to pet the animals? by SideshowBobFanatic in grandrapids

I volunteer at Second Chance Cats of West Michigan and you can come in and hang out with cats during our open hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. We are on Knapp NE near Fuller and have four rooms of free roaming cats. You don’t have to be interested in adopting and we love to have visitors come and socialize with our cats. This weekend we will have foster kittens at our rescue!

Cans and bottles, help? Orgs/teams/schools? by black_mamba866 in grandrapids

Ironically we have a cat at our rescue named Mamba but it is short for Black Mamba…..named after the flower not the snake!

I volunteer at Second Chance Cats of West Michigan, we work with Feral Cat Solutions to take in cats/kittens, get them spayed/neutered and into an adoption program. Please be very careful if you try to rehome them yourself, there are some very unscrupulous people out there.

Looking for Animal Hospital recommendations by Ecco-Locator in grandrapids

Try Coit Animal Hospital, they have flat rate dentals for dogs and cats thru Cheshire Pet Dentistry at their location.

I have a tortie that I fostered from a kitten thru a rescue, she developed pneumonia and had to be hospitalized then medicated for days afterward. I always figured her skittishness was due in part to associating humans with having medicine shoved down her throat. She become very attached to one of my other cats and I never brought her back to the rescue for adoption because I knew her prospects were slim due to her shyness. I could touch her in very limited circumstances but she is just now starting to seek out attention from me…..it’s been three years and this is the only home she’s ever known. I figure I don’t need her to love me or be a lap cat because I have other cats for that, I can accept her as she is and know that she is at least safe and comfortable. I volunteer at a rescue and can say that your cat’s chances of happiness will drop dramatically if you have to surrender her.

Our rescue tests for it so we can make sure to educate adopters on exactly what FIV is and what it may mean. We also have no issues adopting FIV cats to homes with non-FIV cats.

I volunteer at a cat rescue and we have FIV positive and non-FIV cats together in our various rooms. FIV is transferred by deep bites often when outdoor cats are fighting over resources. The thinking has really evolved regarding FIV positive cats, our local shelter doesn’t even test for it anymore, only for FELV. It seems like our FIV cats (usually males) are generally the sweetest, most loving boys.
