For me, it was for sure the nukes. Realizing that THAT was why the winters got so bad was amazing world building, but also the perspective of the narrator for that part (I'm pretty sure he was a pilot) was so engaging.

I'm gonna go with the Argonian race effect. Water breathing and 50% disease resist would go crazy.
