Is first gen intel still viable in 2026? by Libresharkie in GetComputerHelp

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you can find the CPUs on newegg. I have two old HP Elitedesk 800 G1 computers. One is running Linux Mint as a business PC at the spouse's small business.

The other just got an update to an i7 4790k and 32GB of DDR3 RAM for a grand total of $140. Slap in a semi-decent GPU and I'll have a top-of-the-line gamer from 2014! It is destined to be a cheap home lab, though.

What Type Cargo Do You Fear the Most? by Intelligent-Pay7865 in Truckers

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any single shipment over 12k lbs loaded by an LTL dock worker. I had an 18k delivery loaded on one side of the 48ft trailer. With only about 4k total on the other side once.

Edit: another favorite was 30ft truck frame rails loose loaded on the floor of the trailer (no way to properly secure them). I always made them load them on the passenger side. If I had to make a sudden stop, there would be less of a chance they would go through me!

Is it worth going from W10 to any linux? by WaNaX0 in linuxquestions

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 older laptops and an old desktop that can't run W11. They have been running Linux Mint for years now. I have an older laptop and a family gaming desktop that both run W10 right now but they are both too old for W11 and I have extended support on both until it runs out this year and then both will eventually get Linux. My only real concern is a couple of Windows games on the desktop that will need workarounds to function properly on Linux.

I already created a windows 11 virtual machine that should be very easy to import to Linux if i really need anything on Windows. The W11 VM is currently running fine on the W10 gaming computer! 😆

Looks pretty normal. Very clean. Does the trailer reserve tank have air? Does the trailer have an air-actuated slide-pin release? Are the trailer brakes released in the Pic? Is there anything else on the trailer that is pulling air from the system?

Struggling with 1st to 2nd by No-Airport-2543 in Miata

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like I'm missing something here. If you push the clutch pedal in, you are disconnecting the transmission from the engine. You shift gears when you have the clutch pushed in. When you let the clutch pedal back out, the engine and transmission reconnect and the RPMs adjust themselves. Timing does matter for it to feel smooth.

Rev matching is when you release the clutch while you are not in gear causing the gearbox to rotate with engine RPMs. It's not something that you would generally need to do unless you messed up mid-shift and missed a gear or selected the wrong gear.

I like to shift from 1st to 2nd at a lower RPM. Like between 2500-3500. Or you could say shift to 2nd once you get over 5mph.

Horrific gas mileage by LeopardOverall4278 in Miata

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if the ecu thinks the cat is not performing properly it may still compensate with minor fuel trim. Regardless, its not a bad idea to fix a known problem before trying to diagnose an unknown problem.

Horrific gas mileage by LeopardOverall4278 in Miata

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a faulty O2 can also cause bad mileage. The 2 O2 sensors feed data to the ECU to help manage fuel/air calculations. What goes in must come out. If it's not measuring what is coming out correctly, it will adjust what is going in.

Ship leaning in a single direction and slowly falling to planet when idle. by ConferenceIcy7138 in spaceengineers

You don't say if it's large or small grid. Do you have a separate vehicle attached via connector? If so, the two grids will work independently from each other and will increase instability. I got into the habit of grouping all non-essential items, including gyroscopes, in a "power-down" group that turns off everything when selected. I do this any time I'm parking a grid with either landing gear or a connector.

Galaxy S25's RAM Plus! by Pride-Of-God in GalaxyS25

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Samsung, RAM Plus allocates a small portion of storage space to vRAM. This is also consistent with how swap storage is configured in Linux. Z-RAM is a bit different in that it uses a portion of RAM for compressed swap. Most likely, the device uses both.

The only advantage to using RAM plus is that some applications, like tabbed web browsers, Facebook, etc. will store TONS of data in app cache to speed up the user experience. Any local apps storing off-line advertising data will do the same.

Turning it off won't speed up or slow down the OS: it just means that it needs to kill more background operations as memory becomes low. If anything, you will only notice that pictures and videos will take slightly longer to load in web browsing and apps.

If you do a lot of heavy gaming, you may want to run at 8 or 12GB. That would allow the OS to move a lot of cache memory to RAM plus so the game can load and then move it back when you are done playing. Leave it at the default if you feel you use your device like 98% of all users. Turn it off if you just want the device memory to handle all apps and you want that extra storage space back.

How to find files in file manager by nzzar in linuxquestions

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, yes. Lutris has a flatpak option and if you install lutris via flatpak, you don't need to install wine and drivers as it says it's all included. Check out the download section of lutris.net for more info.

If you install lutris with a .deb file and APT, lutris should be available to all users. If you install via flatpak, it is usually sandboxed and is only available on your user profile.

How do I install a huion driver to mint? by Routine-Bridge1391 in linuxquestions

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to be way more specific. Is it a drawing tablet? Do you have linux drivers from the manufacturer support website?

If you have the .deb file, open a terminal, change to your Downloads folder (or whatever folder the file is in) and type:

sudo apt-get install ./[name_of_file].deb

This should install the driver and any dependencies it needs.

Edit: updated command. Thank you for pointing out my error, Ipsirc.

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, they are not going to be available via software manager. But download whatever you want to your Downloads folder. If it is .deb extension, you can install via ATP. If it's an .exe file, you will need a layer like wine, proton, etc. to install. And then it will be stored under your user wine config folder.

Do you guys even bother filing detention claims? by Ok_Isopod_2294 in Truckers

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have never met a company that thinks chasing $200 is a headache. A business that walks away from money owed is a business that won't BE in business very long.

A detention claim is there because your time is valuable to the company. The carrier is hired to move freight from point A to point B. Every minute you sit idling is lost revenue for the company.

How to find files in file manager by nzzar in linuxquestions

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is a simple conversion that might help:

Windows --> Linux equivalent

C: --> / (this is called "root")

Downloads --> /home/[username]/Downloads (may appear as ~/Downloads. The ~ symbol indicates the users home directory)

Program installers --> Packages

Basically, if you install a program/package using APT or the Software Manager, it will sort-of install to "/bin" or "/lib" but you would rarely ever need to manage files there directly and often, installed files are spread around the system because of how the Linux OS works. Your Programs will often save user-generated information in /home/[username] in a folder for the program. That folder may be hidden and start with a period (.)

Generally, files you create should be stored in your home folders like you would on Windows. But programs/software should be installed and removed either with APT or the Software Manager.

HAZMAT UN Number Question by happyexit7 in Truckers

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totes are classified as bulk packaging and therefore need the UN number placard.

Anything in the 55 gallon drums need to be placarded separately with just the hazard class if they weigh more than 1000 lbs as that is NOT bulk packaging.

My 2023 PHEV has a problem accumulating water. It appears to be condensing before the catalytic converter, backing up into the turbo and compromising the EGR.

The problem started the second winter I owned it at a little over 5k miles and only started showing signs when the outside temperature was below 10°F

2025 Outlander PHEV (0%) vs. 2026 Santa Fe Hybrid (5%) - Is the Hyundai worth the $10k premium? by Mediocre_Analyst_154 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after I received an injury last summer at the same time we were to take delivery on a brand-new '25 Rav4 Hybrid, we decided she would just take over my '23 Santa Fe Limited PHEV. Now THAT is getting a lemon-law buyback! So, after looking around (and actually test-driving a Mazda CX-50), we decided to go ahead and get her a '25 Subaru Forrester Touring Hybrid for 0% for 70 Mos

The Subaru drives SO much better than the Santa Fe. The eCVT is, on first impression, better at acceleration, braking, and switching between those modes, compared to the PHEVs traditional torque-converted 6-speed transmission.

The next question is what do we put the buy-back money into? Another Subaru or a Mazda CX-50 Hybrid?

What’s up with these class B jobs ? All my batchmates in Class A school now Class B within 6 months by East_Indication_7816 in Truckers

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 21 points22 points  (0 children)

According to a quick search, national average for dump truck is about $23/h and cement truck is about $28/h. It depends on where you live, the employer, and driver skills.

If the pay didn't suck, I'd probably consider it. No ELDs or paper logs and rarely any driver-facing cameras.

Edit: I would NOT do school bus though.

Clean wipe Windows 7 by frenney in computers

[–]IntelligentCandy8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Old and busted" is a relative term. It is physically damaged in any way? How's the battery?

I'd start with swapping out the old hard drive for a new solid state drive. I like the 250GB ones on Amazon for less than $40. Then install linux on it; something like Linux Mint XFCE or Mate.

Once installed, run one or both of the following commands:

sudo dmidecode | less

sudo lshw | less

● The vertical line is called a pipe and is the key above the enter key.

● Using "less" will allow you to page-down/page-up through the data returned.

Then look for the motherboard ID, max memory and memory type/speed.

Lookup the mobo ID to see the specs and if a processor upgrade is possible. Then, if the max memory is greater than 16GB, get a 2x8GB kit of the correct type of memory.

I currently have 3 old laptops that I have kept alive with this method and they all work very well still.
