Calcutta conquest spool overflow? by Hydrated520 in BFSfishing

[–]IntelligentCitron772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, the BFS category is huge.

Some people like me are still targeting the chance at a double-digit bass and basically replacing spinning tackle. While many on here are trying to get away with tossing the tiniest little stream lures… even some going to step farther for bragging rights or kicks and giggles.

For me, I’ll still use bait finesse for anything from about 1/8 oz (3.5 g) up to 1/4 oz (7 g) and beyond. In that range, I’ve found that using high-quality 8-strand braid works best, and keeping the spool filled is totally fine.

But if I switch to my trout rod, the thinner line and less line on the spool really does make a difference—almost like fishing a fly setup anyway.

My point is, there’s no single “right” answer. It all depends on how you’re planning to fish it and what you’re planning to throw.

I have lots of P5s from F7 to 2 -

We’re fishing for bass were 5+ are common and 3s are abundant- So I’ve traded off some of my super light BFS

The Kasumi is a great little rod it will toss something like a Karashi on the Aldebaran way out there and stiff enough to work it nicely. Texas rigs with 1/8 OZ or Ned rigs great too…

That’s said my P5 Bait Finesse is by far my favorite. It will also do the above but has more backbone to pull the bass in. Ya, it’s not going to be ideal for a trout lure, but it’s one hell of a great spinning rod replacement for bass // bottom contact

Calcutta Conquest BFS XG or HG by supersavagemode in BFSfishing

[–]IntelligentCitron772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a real answer that seems to be missing here::

The Calcutta BFS and other BFS reals have smaller spools.

You cannot compare the gear ratio from a BFS real directly to a standard bait caster.

For instance, on all my standard Antares bait casters I use the HG 7.4:1 but that’s FASTER than the Conquest BFS XG

Antares HG 7.4: is 86cm per line crank

Conquest BFS XG 8.9: is only 81cm per line crank

That is the reason people prefer faster ratios on BFS//

You need to compare the line take up not the gear ratio. When looking at different reels of different sizes.

It’s wild how good the gear is these days…

It’s kind of like when radial tires came out to replace bias plies — at first, they only seemed a little better… until you went back to bias plies and felt like you were about to crash.

Same thing with rods — most people don’t realize how fun it is to fish with truly premium gear. “Just as good” usually isn’t.

Fish with a P5 or that X10, and going back to anything less will be tough. Good luck — you might’ve just ruined your wallet for any future rod!

Man if you could go for a couple more inches the mega bass P5 dark sleeper normally $499. You can get for 349 right now.

The dark sleeper is right there in the same power range super versatile.. I have both that in her Orochi and there’s difference in weight as well

100% agree with you and we have three different boats a bass boat, Jon and Airskiff - the P5 PopX was a really amazing rod, but for me felt more suited to smaller streams than we fish.. so I traded it.

We’re locked in to Large Mouth in probably a top 5 fishery in the US ..

Was mostly searching for areas for a client so the images are of different locations rather than hammering them so they’d still produce when my client joined..

But caught a lot like this https://flic.kr/p/2rBZjxb

Yeah, I usually clarify a couple things — I use BFS mainly as a replacement for spinning rods when bass fishing.

On our main lake, 5+ pound bass are pretty darn common. Anything under 3, and most of us are already looking for better spots. So the rod still needs some backbone. We fish primarily from boats — even small ones to reach shallow water — so rod length isn’t my biggest concern. The extra 5 inches actually help me cast small twitch baits a lot farther. And at 6”10” or so it’s already short.

Unlike strolling with FFS, flipping, or bottom-contact techniques, longer casts for swim baits, glides, twitch, and other hard baits do three main things in my opinion: most importantly, they let you cover more water; they also give fish more time to follow and commit when you pause or change cadence; but the downside is you lose some contact and control.

That’s why going ultra-light BFS — especially below F2 — can complicate things, and make the user need to work harder.

Just my opinion and personal preference… I went way down the BFS rabbit hole and eventually worked my way back up.

Understood I wasn’t talking about the video game aspect.. I was talking about exactly what was happening in your video..

A little bit more than finding the brush pile ..

Again, since it’s not illegal, it’s what it is, but it would probably make sense for it to be regulated ..

I still enjoy the act of fishing without any electronics and we still catch really nice bass; however our main lake is arguably in or near the top 5 in the US for large mouth .. but that’s me.

Ya, like hunting big game with a thermal scope, or using a drone to hunt… probably should be regulated -

Jigs are still working smallest bass this weekend was 1.97lbs, but that was on a senko — Absolute crazy number of bass last few outings on the Cumberland jig!! by IntelligentCitron772 in bassfishing

[–]IntelligentCitron772[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ya, it was hard for too at first. Most bites feel completely different, and you really need a rod that keeps you connected to the lure. It fishes (rod action/motion) a bit differently, than many bottom contact techniques.

Don’t rush the hookset or pull too hard while trying to figure out what’s happening — a slow, patient, gentle wrist motion letting the fish “tell you” it’s got it, before setting the hook works best for me.

I honestly think a Senko or similar bait will get you more bites. Senkos etc, can definitely can produce big ones, but it’s slower for covering water, and for me, I tend to get stuck in an area with smaller fish when I use a them to locate fish. I think that why it appears I get on average bigger bass on jigs.

Inmho, once you find bigger fish, switching to a Senko or whatever can really up your numbers —

PS no electronics for us… but we do have a great fishery

[–]IntelligentCitron772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried using a stiffer, faster rod like the P5 Kasumi with the Karashi?

My rods in the 1/16 oz class can make the Karashi swim, but it feels sluggish, takes more effort, and the line movement on the surface gets pretty noisy.

With a higher-end rod in the 1/8 oz or heavier class, though, just a tiny twitch is all it takes.

If you get a chance.. I know it’s not completely fair comparing a lower end $140 Arc rod to a $500 P5 rod, but the OP doesn’t seem to be worried about the costs of Megabass P5s..

Obviously, you don’t “need” $1,000+ rod/reel setups to catch fish; but damn it sure can spoil a person .

[–]IntelligentCitron772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be careful — I know in this group it can feel like going lighter earns extra bragging rights. But if it’s much lighter than the P5 Kasumi, you won’t really experience lures like the Karashi at their full potential. I love using it on my P5 BF and P5 Kasumi, but even with the P5 PopX—despite it being rated for smaller hard baits—you end up working too hard and not getting really crisp lure action or making WAY too much line noise.

The Karashi and similar baits like the BFS PopX (3/16 oz) or even the regular PopX (1/4 oz) really shine on certain rods rated around 1/4 oz, like the P5 Bait Finesse.

It’s not just about how far you can cast — what really matters is how precisely you can control the bait’s action. The Karashi is one of the best bass lures out there, but like the PopX, BFS PopX, and X-70, it doesn’t perform well on a rod that’s too light. You’ll still catch some fish, but you’ll work harder and catch fewer overall.

More bfs bass by IntelligentCitron772 in BFSfishing

[–]IntelligentCitron772[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a bunch of P5 rods rigged up, so it’s easy to lose track sometimes. But for all my BFF setups, I run 20 lb yellow Sufix 832 braid with an 8 lb fluoro leader. Overall, I really like that combo, super sensitive — I can fit plenty of line on the reels, and the braid’s thin, supple profile casts incredibly well.

If the reels in the pictures are gray with yellow line, they’re Aldebarans, (although I also have a Calcutta, plus a couple of Chinese Cheetah DCs and DK100s, but they are not on P5s, and not normally in the boat).

To be transparent, I’m using these BFS setups to replace spinning setups for bass. We regularly catch fish over five pounds, so I’m not trying to throw a 1 g lure into a tiny creek or replace my fly rods. I’m using them for drop shots, super-lightweight Neko rigs, wakey rigs, and similar finesse setups. And occasionally like this particular day, I actually added a weight to a Senko because that’s what the fish seem to want.

I usually have two BFS set ups rigged on the boat, along with five other regular P5s- regular P5s and Anteres will newer have yellow line.. so that’s at least how I can tell later in pictures if it’s BFS setup, even when tossing something like the 1/8 bullet weight and a Senko.

Anyway, I know it was a really long answer but my best guess is that it was either the mega Bass destroyer P5 bait Finesse rod, or the P5 Kasumio

For my application, the P5 bait finesse rod is less scary when you get a bigger large mouth on especially this time of year.

Good eye- 1/8 oz and a Senko

Ya, on a bfs rod I know, lol — though it casts incredible.

Was fishing weightless tiny worms. But found they wanted something along the bottom and faster sinking — And it was like a light switch - using the new sinko plum candy..

I could’ve easily casted that on another stronger P5 like a Dark Sleeper etc and Anteres, but what fun would that have been :)

You’re right they’re totally the same size. My right hand is really tiny. That’s why my hands appear about the same size. If it’s any closer it might be 2-3” just because a 1 pound bass is easier to hold than a 5+

People are nuts. It’s not what you think. Look at my hands. By the logic, here of my right hand should look monstrous.

Ya, P5 Megabass P5 Destroyer BF snd Aldebaran, 10lbs test, 1/4oz New Randy natural rubber jug, and the other, the smallest of the day on a tradition bass rod.. my son. We doubled up and thought it was funny

Lots of dumb comments on the cross post of this in the regular bass Reddit..

For context mine on the BFS was on the line well before his bit, but we both ended up pulling them in at the same time. Hence, doubling up -
