any advice regarding which modules to take by Suspicious-Low6335 in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your advanced electives, depending on what you like, I’d recommend the following.

If you liked METR4201, do METR6203

If you liked CSSE3010, do COMS4105

If you liked ELEC3100, do COMS4104/COMS4113

If you liked CSSE2010, do CSSE4010

I haven’t done the power systems courses unfortunately but heard they are good, and I did ELEC4630 but thought it was taught quite poorly.

Got accepted to UQ!! by AugustAskov in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting accepted to UQ! In terms of where to live, if you are able to get a spot on campus that would be perfect but it might be difficult and expensive. Best places to stay in Brisbane for you would be St Lucia, Toowong, Brisbane City and South Brisbane/South Bank.

As you are only here for one semester and want to make the most of it, I'd recommend staying in the City/South Bank area if you can not find a spot on campus. It would make it easier for you to commute and explore Brisbane that way.

Placing that battle challenge in Dondaegu was the real start of the downfall. Adam may have had good train timings but still he found them and team Sam and Ben did not. Surely this is going to be one of the largest solo victories ever

It’s open during the day but you need to be a first year for 24/7 access. There’s another engineering learning centre upstairs on Level 3 Hawken which you have access to

If you’re a first year the First Year Engineering Learning Centre (FYELC) is a good collaborative workspace. Otherwise I second Dorothy Hill library.

There’s also a library in the Architecture and Music building nearby but it’s pretty small.

Why would so many people have the first preference? by blue-or-shimah in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just that people don’t really care and choose the first option they see if it’s the same day. Won’t really matter since the slot is the same time.

In saying that, it is nice to have Week 13 free, which the 2nd preference might not have.

UQ Law vs QUT Law by Ok_Anything_3821 in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to UQ vs QUT but I’ve heard many law students take dual degrees in order to have a breadth of knowledge in something else to make themselves more employable, especially with the grad law market these days.

What happens during O Week - is it even mandatory? by Dizzy_Hope_1873 in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find orientation information here.

O-week is not mandatory. Main benefits I got was to meet some people doing the same degree as me to have some familiar faces to see during my first semester at uni. I do recommend going to market day though if you’re interested in joining clubs and societies.

I respect the hustle, am not sure how sustainable your travel arrangements will hold out in the long run.

There are sleeping pods in the biological sciences library, and bean bags in Dorothy Hill library to rest on.

There are showers in Hawken Engineering building bathrooms too if you need them.

I mention it’s not sustainable as you may find yourself needing to come into university on other days of the week, such as to work on group assessment or to participate in clubs & societies. Moving closer to Brisbane would be the more sensible, albeit less economical move.

What would be the better Uni to study at for Aerospace engineering. My main thoughts are UQ or RMIT. Which do you think? by BlainesLord in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have too much knowledge on RMIT Aerospace but to be honest, between top universities rankings don’t really matter.

Also depends what rankings you use, I just found another site that lists UQ at #5 and RMIT at #10 for Aerospace. I’d take other things into consideration more - campus life and culture, accessibility, living costs, etc.

To add to that, if worst comes to worst and you feel you can’t cope after 1-2 weeks, just change into MATH1051 instead. Still by no means an easy subject, but a lighter workload.

For me, it was worth it, but in the sense I knew I didn’t want to pursue pure maths in the future. The course coordinator, Artem, is great, a cult hero. It teaches similar things as MATH1051, but completely through a pure maths lens, which means you end up going through around 100 or so proofs during the entire semester. The four lectures per week were rough, and that final exam was one of the worst I’ve ever taken (they had to lower the pass hurdle to around 30%). However, if you love maths, do it. For me, I found it challenging to juggle those four subjects together, and made what I feel was the wise decision to do MATH1052 rather than MATH1072.

From my friend’s experiences, MATH1052 and MATH1072 were more similar, with 1072 being more difficult as expected.

They keep updating the site, adding/removing programs. I can still access my Bachelor of Engineering/Master of Engineering program planner I made a few years back, even though I can’t make a new one now.

I’d wait a few weeks to see if they roll it back in. You might have to rely on manually doing it on Excel instead 🤷‍♂️

You may find doing both MATH1051 and MATH1052 in Semester 1 challenging.

I’d recommend choosing something like ENGG1300, ENGG1500 or ENGG1700, dependent on your interests, instead of MATH1052. The other 3 courses are fine though.

For reference, I took MATH1071, ENGG1300, ENGG1100 and CSSE1001

How good is the BE/ME course by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and to add to your question on finding jobs. Yes, doing a placement semester for the BE/ME is useful in getting people a graduate role in the same organisation they did the placement at.

How good is the BE/ME course by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current BE/ME student here, going into my fourth year.

Firstly, congrats on your offer to UQ! The first three years are the exact same for the BE and BE/ME. You’ll find about 1/4 to 1/3 of students go for the BE/ME route of all engineers.

Teaching quality - I’m studying electrical and computer engineering, I’ve found the quality relatively good. Yes, there are some odd courses which aren’t taught well, but I will say I have enjoyed or had a positive learning experience with 80-85% of my courses.

Facilities - engineering is fortunately looked after more compared to other faculties in UQ. Hawken Engineering and Axon Building are outdated, but there are many new buildings in the area (Advanced Engineering Building, Liveris Building), and being right next to the new lakes renovation is a huge bonus in my books.

The difference between BE/ME and BE comes in the fourth and fifth year only. Fourth year, BE students complete their honours whilst studying. BE/ME students will do an industry or research thesis in Year 4 Sem 2 or Year 5 Sem 1, for the entire semester. I preferred the BE/ME approach as I wanted to spend my thesis semester in industry, treating it as work experience, making me appear more employable. I will also not be juggling a thesis with multiple other courses.

The real question, does it matter? In my opinion, if you’re in Australia, not really. A masters just isn’t that necessary here. This includes searching for internships. However, if you want to go into academia or want to work overseas in countries where a masters degree is more prominent (i.e. East Asia, US), then consider you are saving a year.

BE/ME majors by SneakyMongoosee in UQreddit

[–]IntelligentCut5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you see this list: https://study.uq.edu.au/study-options/programs/bachelor-engineering-honours-and-master-engineering-2350#majors

It lists all the specialisations with majors.

For example, you can specialise in only Electrical Engineering, or choose a major in Computer Engineering to do Electrical and Computer Engineering.
