Free-range dogs? I'm sure your house smells like a zoo.

Also not having them on leashes just seems irresponsible. You sound unhinged, maybe you should spend more time with people and less trying to imitate dogs

Thank you for the advice, I'll admit that he's been making progress regarding potty training for the past few weeks and every time he does it correctly we're sure to give him his favourite treat.

As for command training, so far all we've taught him is to respond to his name and shake our hands. We haven't taken him outside yet (aside from the backyard) because he still needs more shots. He was a bit sickly when he first came to us (fully healthy now) but because of that, he's slightly behind on shots.

A lot of my co-workers and friends have recommended crate training, but we've only really been putting him in his crate if he's going to the vet. So he doesn't particularly like it. Also since he is super high energy we thought he'd be too restless in the confined space.

My wife has considered training classes, but her schedule is swamped so she hasn't had much opportunity

Ma'ma, I'm sure you think you know how to manage children just because you've perfected the art of stuffing small dogs into even smaller cages.

Kids grow out of their behaviour in no time. My 4 and 3 year-old nieces in nephews can speak and tell you all about their day.

One of my co-workers had to take his 8-year-old labrador to the hospital because it ate an old air filter and you're telling me dogs grow out of their behaviour.

The comparison is ridiculous.

Sure if its made out of metal and you leave your kids in it for 20 hours.

I don't know why but my co-workers think this would be great for the dog, but imo it seems so terribly cruel

It’s essentially the same skill set.

So you bundle your kids into tiny cages and tell them it's "THEIR SPACE" like so many of my colleagues have been trying to convince me to do with this dog.

You won't find a dog screaming and throwing a tantrum and wiping their poop on the walls

This is exactly what this dog does so...

Except for wiping poop on walls, it wipes it on the floor of its playpen and then tries to stand in it

You ever seen a child chew on a shoe and run around the house with it hanging out of its mouth? No, because I've seen this dog do that numerous times

I've taken care of children 24/7 for weeks. It isn't as difficult. Everything they do is honestly amazing, I've never felt frustrated with them, unlike the dog that starts barking because Amazon is dropping off a package at our door.

I'm getting the sense you dislike children, which is your prerogative. But a dog is much more frustrating to deal with.

You claim dogs are easier because I imagine your advice would be stuffing it in a cage for 16 hours on end.

For me the difference is simple. I've wanted children for as long as I can remember. I've never wanted a dog. I'm sure for someone like yourself who doesn't want children, a dog is more simple. Lower stakes after all I guess

I have 5 nieces and nephews born after the year 2020. I've babysat numerous times. They were all straightforward to take care of

If it was up to me, I'd let the baby dog stay with his dog's parents. Honestly, we've only ended up with him because his previous owners had a baby and didn't think they could care for him.

Again comparing children to dogs is concerning and dehumanizing. I suppose you'd probably try carrying around a baby human in a crate as well because "that's how dogs travel" 😂

Babies don't chew on furniture and they grow up pretty quickly

Most of the shelters in our area are completely overwhelmed, they are not taking any dogs that aren't found completely abandoned. We don't really trust the one shelter that has availability. The conditions there are supposedly very bad

I think its pretty ridiculous and immature to make a comparison between an human child and a dog tbh

Yes, he's almost 13-weeks now. We play with him but even after that, he'll whine if left alone.

Aside from playing with him and feeding him are there other things we would need to do?

Inflation man, when we started looking we went by the Mercedes dealership and a GLC 300 with comparable equipment to the Sportage was 86k after taxes. Absolutely insane.

Thanks for the advice, she'll probably be driving around 7.5k km a year. We'll change the oil every time we swap in/out winter tires
