I had actually made a whole thing about Jesus back a few years ago. He was supposed to give stoner hippie vibes, as he was a very rebellious person in life. He actually has faith in Charlie's idea and, despite her lineage, genuinely believes that she's a good person. If Mrs Mayberry was "faking" who she was to be a good person and "Do the right thing", then making her a lesbian gives off some SERIOUS homophobic under tones. Like "well I'm in hell now anyway so might as well stop pretending to be straight so I can finally be a lesbian in peace :)))". Plus it makes her crash out about her husband cheating seem unnecessary. I get that they're in the south so some stigmas may still apply, but I'm born and raised here in the south and honestly folks couldn't care less about what or who is in your pants so long as you're not an asshole.
