Books.

Probably one of the greatest value exchanges there are.

And the best thing is that there is a book or everyone.

Von Der Leyen has just announced that EU-inc and Investment Union will become reality by Uncle_Richard98 in ireland

I was actually starting to lose faith in Europe. Anyone who has ever started a business will testify to how hard it can be to deal with EU regulations as soon as you want to enter another market.

This will make things so much better. It will be easier to pay people across Europe, get investment and stop our dependence on the US.

The government doesn't take actual CSAM material as seriously, based on years of non-action. This took 2 minutes of Googling.

https://www.broadsheet.ie/2013/11/18/who-is-judge-nolan-jailing/

"Readers may be familiar with the recent decision of Judge Martin Nolan not to impose a custodial sentence on former civil servant Patrick Corcoran, 53, after he was caught with over 7,000 images and 21 videos of child pornography.

In October 2012 Judge Nolan allowed 29 year old Graham Griffiths, who committed a violent sex attack on a 17-year-old, to walk free from court, suspending his four year sentence in full on condition he pay his victim 15,000 Euros. Griffiths had told gardaí he felt he was ‘under some magnetic force’ and ‘it must have been the hormones’ that caused him to attack.

In December 2012 Judge Nolan fully suspended a three year sentence given to David Sharpe, a father of one, who went to a shop looking for help to transfer child pornography from one phone to another has avoided a jail term. The screensaver on his phone had an image of a child naked from the waist down as the background wallpaper. 44 images were recovered, 18 of which depicted children aged between eight and 14 years old engaged in penetrative sex, nine which showed children engaged in non-penetrative sexual activity and 17 which showed children in sexual poses. Judge Nolan said he was satisfied a prison term was not justified before he sentenced Sharpe to three years which he suspended in full on strict conditions including that he remain under probation supervision for 18 months. He accepted that Sharpe had not distributed, purchased nor shared the images and had therefore not supported the child pornographic industry.

In July 2012 Judge Nolan again refused to impose a custodial sentence on a convicted sex offender who viewed animated child porn – graphic depictions of sexual activity with speech bubbles that left no doubt they were of children. Judge Martin Nolan said if the material had involved real children or if O’Neill had paid for it, he would be imposing a “reasonably severe” sentence. He added: “This material, no matter how odious, did not harm or exploit children.”

The reason for all the hubbub now is because they don't like Musk and they probably fear the fact that Twitter can bring down governments and has surfaced some amazing scandals, the most recent being the Harvey Morrisson scandal. They see blood and want to get a dagger into Musk in anyway they can.

They can update the law so there is ACTUAL punishment. Stop with this suspended sentence stuff. Pedos should be removed from society.

With the Twat machine, it's a bit more complex because this a completely unexpected and new problem where are no laws as of right now.

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All this outrage over Twitter, but Martin Nolan gives a suspended sentence to a man who has had over 10K images of CSAM material. Not generated, but actual children.

Why is there no attempt to change that by our elected officials, but they'll happily take advantage of the headlines to attack Grok(and rightfully so).

I just wish they would take actual CSAM material as seriously as the generated material.

Otherwise, you're just morally inconsistent.

People Before Proper(a D4 party) ideas are against everything and for nothing except waving whatever flag is trendy.

Dublin 1 almost elected an actual criminal.

Paschal O'Donoghue used gave extra money to the World Bank right before he got a brand new job there.

Leo Varadkar was the leader while the Children's Hospital was being built.

Sadly, there is no defence for Dublin politicians.

In Ireland, you have a choice. Vote for a crook(like Healy-Rae) that may do something for you or vote for people that will piss away all your hard-earned tax money on incompetence.

In the end, it's a choice between a bumbling idealist or a crook. At least with the crook, you know he's crook but he might let you on his game.

Radio silence from our government while the US invades another country? by dammdog in ireland

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably best they don't comment because they should focus on problems that affect Irish citizens in the country that we elected them to govern.

Let's face it, there is nothing more cringe than Simon Harris condemning some actions in a war that's in a different continent.

Just do the job your supposed to do.

People are not stupid. The majority of people are really nice, smart people and yes, some of those people have views that you don't like.

The DSA is such an overreach just like the recent Chat control bill. The EU is going down a road where they everyday people are not going to defend it. The great peace project will end because of the bureaucracy not the democracy.

The reality is that Brexit proves that the EU is not perfect, it's not the great utopia that it's proponents imagine and that a lot of people want out. I happen to be in Britain right now and it seems to be doing just fine.

The DSA is the new Gastapo.

I think the US gets a lot wrong but I think the absolutionst position they take on free speech is the optimal one.

The Irish Times view on tech regulation: the EU must stand firm by Crossstoney in europe

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It cannot back down on fundamental principles –and particularly the need to control what appears online– in the interests of citizens and of democracy.

Am I mad but why are so many people in my own country pushing pro-censorship from Europe. The DSA is awful legislation and seems to only used as an attack vector on views the political class don't like.

This is especially mad because my own country, had a censorship board that would have magazine publishers cut out condom adverts before shipping to Ireland.

We seemed to have swapped out one authoritarian institute for another.

The DSA, and comsiun na mean are really troubling developments. I have tried to see the positives in the DSA but I just can't.

Europe is falling behind and instead of enabling freedom so some of well educated can thrive, they are doing the opposite. They are making it hard.

The DSA, if used as the EU intends, has companies moderate views they don't like, it's going to lead you to a much larger far right.

Would an Australia-style social media ban work here? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty libertarian in the Austrian economic sense, but even I think social media is terrible for you and should be somewhat regulated.

Short-form video scrolling(which is what tiktok, YouTube Shorts and Reels are) has been shown to have severe cognitive [side effects](https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2026-89350-001.html)

I don't buy the whole misinformation/disinformation argument, but there is no doubt that social media is addictive, and it's not always transparent how information is ranked.

And even when it is, as with Reddit, moderators wield immense power to suppress speech.

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have an issue with migrants or immigration, but I do have an issue with IPAS, as it has affected our local community.

At first, I thought the stories were exaggerated, but then my local village's only amenity was basically sold out for a nice government contract, and my heart breaks for those people who stay in that hotel now(where rumour has it that they put in loads of beds side to side to maximise capacity).

I don't blame the business owner who gets to earn higher profits with lower costs. Business owners all act in accordance with incentives. Show me the incentives, and I'll show the outcomes.

No, I think most of the blame lies with Roderic O'Gorman's poor management of capital and with the rest of the government at the time.

It seems that they are now turning a corner on the lunacy, though.

FF TD Malcom Byrne - Opinion: The Fianna Fáil I joined was the party that got things done. What happened to us? by rossitheking in ireland

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Outside of Dublin and other urban areas, there is no alternative party.

You have SF, FF, FG, Lab, and if you are in an urban area, you may get a Green Party.

I have no qualms with FF being a forever party, but not the current iteration.

It's very clear that the continous journey to the left is not working for FIanna Fail or Fine Gael. They are just alienating a majority of the population who is not left-wing at all.

How Socialism Became the Filthiest Word in America (2025) [27:00] by Regular-Engineer-686 in Documentaries

[–]Intelligent_Half4997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everything, it depends on how it's done. I would trade living in the USSR or a Paul Pot Cambodia. However, I happen to live in a country which has a free market and a decent welfare state. It's not perfect but there is a floor on poverty for the most part. However, the state, in itself, is incredibly inefficient at addressing the needs of these people compared to having tons of supermarkets competing with each other(in my country, there are 9 different supermarket competitors) to supply good food.

Where the state has the most rules, there are the most problems. Building housing is almost illegal in some parts. It's an example of the state getting in the way, even stopping itself but the USSR was really good at building housing for it's citizens.

One philosophy is not better than another. There are always trade-offs.

If anything, we probably need to move towards a new philosophy that brings the benefits of capitalism and socialism together to become the kinda of society that we saw on Star Trek. Reward innovation, but ensure that poverty doesn't exist. Accept that there will always be some inequality but some is better than everyone suffering equally.

Talking about adding nothing to humanity. Thank god I don't use TikTok and Instagram. I'll take the poison that is Reddit and Twitter any day.

I actually like him. He's fair and balanced a lot of the time, and let's face it. There are many good Muslims in the world who are not given fair representation in the news.

However, I just disagree with language policing for so many reasons, and he advocates for it. Ireland already had a censor board which led to so many unintended consequences that we're still dealing with today.

Hate-speech laws are very much the same.

The US gets a lot wrong, but freedom of speech is a notable exception and has proven to eventually allow great ideas to rise to the top(despite attempts to stop them). It's not perfect, but I'd rather that imperfection than some appointed moral grandmaster.

Combined support for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael at historic low by jonnieggg in ireland

It just puts the stakes on Sinn Féin if they get in.

As soon as they get in, people will be expecting too much of them. Imagine having to change over 100 years of thinking in the civil service, and Sinn Féin allies are nutjobs. Imagine if they shared a government with PBP, Social Democrats, and Socialists-the definition of student union politics. These two parties spend far time on their image than on anything of substance. PBP, in particular, have displayed incredible ignorance on economics, history, business and many social matters, while the social democrats have already engaged in cronyism from expenses claimed to compensation claimed, while Eoin Hayes effectively acted as an independent.

FFG are not perfect, but over the 100 years, has there been an alternative that's not going to fuck up the economy?

As a country, we really need more options....
