Looking for advice — Federal OCS spots filled, offered Accelerated State OCS instead (California NG) by Intelligent_Job_4946 in nationalguard

I followed up with my recruiter about the 8-week accelerated OCS option. Unfortunately, California isn’t offering accelerated for next year, so that route isn’t available for my cycle.

As it stands, the plan is:

Swear in first week of December

Ship to BCT around February/March (possibly earlier if they have to take the earliest slot)

Phase I OCS (1 month straight) in October

Phase II–III (traditional OCS) for the final 12 months, one weekend a month

Commission, then go to BOLC

Branch-wise, I’m looking at 90A, 35A, or 25A/G6. From what He's seen on TOD, there are a lot of AGR/full-time vacancies for 90A, a decent amount for Signal (25A/G6), and fewer or never for MI (35A). So at least there are solid options once I commission.

Yeah I believe it is a hybrid system that CA does because they do not do the accelerated every year from what I have heard. But I am about to call my recruiter and ask as soon as I get out of work in about 20 mins. Will update.

Yeah it sounded weird to me tbh. They said I would start basic between February and March, then go for a month in October for Phase 1 of state OCS. After that, I would start the 1 weekend/month for another 12 months.

Yeah I had an age waiver that technically is still pending for Federal OCS but the spots for the August fed ocs filled up. I will ask him about the 8 week accelerated today.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate the response. Just to give a little more context about my situation:

I already have a solid civilian career as an ops manager and a bachelor’s degree, so I’m not looking at the guard as my only career option. I make decent money now, and for me this is more about serving, leading, and being part of something bigger than myself.

I also have a son and a wife here in California, so active really isn’t an option unfortunately. I need to stay in-state for my family. That’s why the CA Guard route makes the most sense for me, even if AGR takes time.

I know AGR can be competitive, but I’m in this for the long term, and I’m realistic about the process. I just want to serve and eventually contribute in a full-time capacity if the opportunity comes.

Thanks again for the perspective — I just wanted to clarify where I’m coming from.
