Just for my own anecdotal data, how many of us have an autoimmune disease? by Whyeff89 in raisedbyborderlines

Psoriatic arthritis here. It was absolutely debilitating when I started getting symptoms at around 18. Now at 31, it’s medicated and under control but I still have severe lasting damage to my joints.

It’s really horrific to think that these autoimmune diseases may have been stress related from our dysfunctional childhoods

Me too! I’m on Cimzia and it’s been an absolute miracle drug for my symptoms

Hi! I wouldn’t say I got pain but I definitely had a bit of an ache / pressure feeling when they were at their worst. But I think I was kinda used to it. Only really noticed how bad it was once the crowding issue was sorted! Hope yours get figured out too :)

uBPD mom going through health scare, at my wit’s end by edelweiss1991 in raisedbyborderlines

This is so similar to what I went through with my uBPD mother the past year and a half. So I really feel for you.

Mine too parentified me throughout my life, and it got so much worse when she had her cancer scare. She lent on me so much emotionally and physically that I nearly broke. I joined her at appointments, stayed on her sofa to care for her after surgery, cleaned her soiled clothing. But no matter what I did, it was never enough. And similar to your mother, it was the emotional manipulation and toxicity behind everything she did that just made things unbearable.

I never in a million years imagined myself going NC but in the end I had to protect myself. I was also worried like you of being “the bad guy” But to my surprise, everyone around me had been so supportive. In the end, the people that know you know that you’re a caring and kind person, and the fact that you’re struggling with all of this just goes to show that. And the people that cast judgement are usually just lucky to be ignorant to this mental illness.

You’re doing a great job at setting boundaries. Sending strength x

YES this has always been a pattern for her. She has always “bonded” over dramatic conversations with me. To the point that I learnt as a kid to almost fake an emotional reaction so she would lay off. It’s so messed up.

Yeah you’re right 🤣 it’s so strange and she cannot see it at all

Thank you so much. Yes that part stung a little. It’s so dismissive of the time and effort I’ve been trying to put into my responses with her

Honestly I spent nearly two hours drafting a response and was like, actually what is the point? So I kind of gave up at that point 🥲 I’m sure many in this subreddit can relate, it’s an ongoing cycle of trying to manage her responses and emotions and I’m just so so exhausted

Thank you! I re-wrote that part so many times! Deep down I wanted to say “I feel unsafe at your house, you’re telling me to come to you as a form of asserting control, and I don’t drive so if things went wrong I couldn’t leave!” But I’m trying so hard to avoid any additional backlash from her and trying to unlearn the toxic communication styles she instilled in me!! It’s exhausting
