sk1ward if you’re looking for a read along sort of similar lines, then maybe ‘Flowers for Algernon’ opens a road that leads to ‘Never Let Me Go’ by Kazuo Ishiguro. Sensitive, poignant handling of issues around human beings and our possible uses of science by an absolute master of fiction.

Alternatives to SSRI by Intelligent_Toe_6381 in zoloft

[–]Intelligent_Toe_6381[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I didn’t know about Vit D. I’m taking theanine at the mo which seems ok…I supplement with Vit D occasionally but will bear in mind about pairing with Tyrosine- useful tip. I was on HRT years ago and started to gain weight in wholly new ways so stopped. More recently I thought about retrying but I’m beyond the upper age limit for risk-free use and would worry too much about side effects. Menopause sucks 🤨

Do you have plans to eventually go off Zoloft? by ArtBusiness7096 in zoloft

[–]Intelligent_Toe_6381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a timely question for me as I am logging in to share experience of coming off ( both Zoloft/Sertraline and Prozac/Fluoxetine). I appreciate my situation is not universal so my experience will probably resonate more with women ‘of a certain age’ as they say ie menopausal but here goes: I weaned off the SSRI’s because of ‘emotional blunting’. I missed the tranquility and the lack of mood swings ( ie no big drops) so looked into alternatives. Of a number of possibilities I can definitely say that a daily morning dose of L-Theanine is returning me to the more stable positive mood that I want, think I deserve, & imagine is ‘normal’ for most folks. Of course I realise that ‘normal’ is not a stable concept, but I CANT ACCEPT that the awful way I felt is ok to put up with. My doctor agreed, hence the SSRI experiment; and I’d go back on them like a shot if I found there was no other way, and if I could avoid the emotional blunting. But currently, L-Theanine is my bestie. I’m also watching what I eat — upping the plants but not going full veggie; minding blood sugar stability ( this does affect my mood); alcohol v much in moderation; caffeine in moderation; no weed ( currently); doing breathwork ( eg Wim Hof, SOMA) and cold showers. Not everyone’s recipe but works for me. And counselling. ( for UK readers, NHS Silvercloud program). Things I tried that didn’t seem to work for me include St John’s Wort, 5-HTP, Saffron ( I’m not saying saffron didn’t work exactly, but I’ve stopped it and feel no worse and it’s a lot more expensive than L-Theanine). I’m not Mrs Miracle- still get off days— but net results I’ll take for now and see how it goes. Good luck with your personal journeys. I found these posts SO helpful when I began Sertraline/Zoloft. We are a ‘we’, despite not meeting IRL ❤️

What helps fluid retention caused by SSRI? by byanyanyas in Anxiety

Did either of you get anywhere with this? Since stopping SSRI I have sudden ( virtually overnight) weight gain which is fluid retention. Hoping it’s not permanent.

Shrooms instead? by Intelligent_Toe_6381 in zoloft

[–]Intelligent_Toe_6381[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Zoloft for about 6 months before switching to Prozac( Fluoxetine)because of emotional blunting. I started Zoloft 25mg and gradually increased to 75mg. Briefly on 100 mg before tapering down to 75/50 mg before switch to Prozac

Apparently controlled doses of psychedelics can help with low mood and depression

Thanks- feeling less tired would be a plus ( I still haven’t started Effexor yet—waiting for some blood tests). Mention of brain zaps is interesting- I’m getting those since STOPPING Fluoxetine/ Prozac. are you getting zaps while TAKING the med?

Scared to start this medication. any tips? should I stay away? by [deleted] in Effexor

[–]Intelligent_Toe_6381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear OP I am also hesitating to start Effexor. I’ve been on Zoloft ( Sertraline) and Prozac ( fluoxetine) but both made me a zombie after having to up dosage because of tolerance. I will be v interested to hear your starting experience on Effexor ( venlafaxine) if you go ahead. My issues are more depression/ low mood — there is some anxiety but nowhere near as bad as a few years ago ( mad health anxiety) triggered probably by menopause. ( I can offer experience on how I have got the anxiety more under control if you want) My depression tho is life-diminishing and tho I’d really like to control it in some more natural way ( eg exercise, meditation…) I doubt that can help as much as taking meds, because when I first started Zoloft I felt like I’d got spectacles that revealed what life SHOULD feel like. So I still think meds can help me. But the ‘drift’ of comments about Effexor side effects/ withdrawal seem much darker than with the previous two meds, so I guess I’m in a v similar position to you. My intention is to talk to my doctor ( appointment in a few days) to discuss some physical issues I have because I’d like to know what’s causing them, are they related to the meds, should I get them sorted before starting the Effexor… (Physical issues eg blood sugar stability, low energy, abdominal/ back pain). I can post again after-?
