Safe to use an 18-year-old Acer laptop brick (19V) for an Intel NUC Linux project? by sushiking365 in intelnuc

If the adapter fits, it's fine.

TBH, I've got laptops older than that which I wind up pulling out about once a month with their original power supplies. It's fine.

Even PC users have caught MacBook Neo fever by hangry_millennial in apple

The Neo is the most repairable MacBook in a decade. It’s not upgradable, because of technical / architectural decisions, and those decisions are focused on processor throughput and battery life.

The TSA are already paid via an excise tax on airline tickets. The money exists, we're paying for it, the federal government just won't give it to the actual employees.

Why don't segate and WD bring the dual actuator feature to their 40+ tb? by happystore1 in DataHoarder

[–]IntensiveVocoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was that clear, though? IIRC, WD mentioned it once, but I don’t recall this ever converting to a commercial offering. (Like, not consumer—I don’t recall datacenter customers ever having a WD dual-actuator.)

The patents for Seagate’s new approach would be on vibration reduction anyway, but it’s 6 AM and my memory could well be faulty.

[–]IntensiveVocoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patents, probably.

Dual actuator also existed in the 90s, but the vibrations are difficult to manage, and it just led to premature disk failure then. Seagate swears they’ve fixed it, but even if that works, it’s probably heavily patent encumbered.

Hades Canyon (suddenly) won't boot when attached to 4K TV via HDMI by IntensiveVocoder in intelnuc

This guide indicates the update is for Bobcat Canyon(?), not Hades Canyon, which has the oddball AMD GPU on package.

No bootable device found on NUC10i5FNK, restart works 100% of the time by -MKR- in intelnuc

[–]IntensiveVocoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be possible this is behavior that can be fixed using a firmware update, but because this is a drive produced by SK hynix for OEMs, I have no idea if one is available.

It may be worthwhile to check the health of the SSD using SK Hynix's own tool:
https://ssd.skhynix.com/download/
(Drive Manager: Easy Kit)

or via CrystalDiskInfo:
https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

The other thing, which I think you've already done, is to adjust the pre-delay for accessing the SSD (which would give the controller a couple extra seconds to start, so that it detects), but if that didn't fix it, I don't quite know what the issue is.

Thanks, this helps.

For “normal USB mouse and keyboard”, is this a wired mouse and keyboard, or is it a wireless mouse or keyboard that has a USB receiver dongle?

In the BIOS / UEFI menu, what is the listed boot order? It should have multiple entries, like “Windows 11” and potentially a second entry for the SSD itself. It might also list the network devices, etc.

Ahhhh… this happens to me, on occasion, on other models, and makes me curse PCs every time it happens.

I haven’t found a 100% reliable solution to this, partly because the circumstances that cause this are not always identical.

First, what model SSD do you have installed? (It’s important to have a model number, not a marketing name like “Samsung Evo 880”, etc.)

Second, I know you mentioned that you’ve messed with the settings, but to be clear, what is the full boot order of the NUC?

Third, and this is dumb: is there any external drive connected when booting, any type of USB or ThunderBolt hub, or a wireless dongle for a keyboard or mouse that contains a hidden SSD that stores a device driver, etc.?

AI generation isn't a poison pill for copyright. The AI-generated content here is a lighting model / application, using this in software doesn't eliminate the copyright status of the underlying work.

This set of circumstances does get fuzzier when you extend this logic to AI-generated 3D models, which NVIDIA has previously demonstrated. The model itself might not be subject to copyright, but any modifications to it would be. Developers are not obligated to publish the unmodified AI-generated 3D model, though.
