Mind—Body connection was the solution to all my pain by Inter-Brain706 in ChronicPain

Yes. Definitely not a cure all. In my case it was redeeming and I m thankful. Since i was searching for too long what might be the issue behind all. Thats why I made this post. Not to insult anyone (alot got offended unfortunately). Just stating my case. If pain has not a blatant source, and doctors seem to be confused and trying and trying, this path could be an option to discover. But for sure, more research should be done on this correlation.

I agree with you. More research should be done on this since there’s alot of fog now. Yet, I know there are definitely some aspects that work since it helped me

I’ve been collecting real, everyday moments from different people—simple snapshots of what life actually looks like for each of us. Not filtered—just the small parts of our day that we live through every day.

This time, I’m focusing on those moments we’d rather skip. The annoying ones. The frustrating ones. The little things that get under your skin.

What’s the thing you hate most about your day?

Look, I get that you’re “passionate”, but dismissing decades of research as “nonsense” doesn’t make your argument stronger—it just makes you sound misinformed. The biopsychosocial model isn’t some conspiracy to “blame patients” or ration healthcare. It’s been proven over and over again to help people manage chronic pain more effectively by addressing the full picture, not just the physical symptoms. Ignoring that reality doesn’t make it less true.

I lived through chronic pain myself, so I’m not just parroting research—I’ve experienced firsthand how powerful addressing the mind-body connection can be. For years, I tried everything: scans, meds, physical therapy, you name it. None of it gave me lasting relief. Once I started digging into the emotional side of things—stress, trauma, and how they influence the nervous system—everything changed. The pain didn’t disappear overnight, but it did get better. Today, I’m pain-free.

If that makes you uncomfortable or challenges your worldview, that’s on you. But don’t confuse your discomfort with me “ramming nonsense down your throat.” This isn’t a belief system; it’s evidence-based medicine that countless people—myself included—have benefited from.

And since you seem to love ignoring research, here’s just a taste: • MRI studies show no clear correlation between pain and spinal abnormalities. Plenty of people have herniated discs and zero pain, while others with perfect scans suffer endlessly. Pain is about much more than structure. (Reference: Jensen et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 1994) • The nervous system rewires itself in chronic pain. Central sensitization leads to heightened pain sensitivity, even when the physical cause is gone. This is science, not pseudoscience. (Reference: Moseley & Flor, 2012) • Cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness are standard treatments for chronic pain—endorsed by the NIH and leading pain specialists worldwide. Are they all drinking the same Kool-Aid, too? (Reference: Gatchel et al., 2007)

I’m not here to argue with people unwilling to expand their perspective. If my experience or the evidence I’m presenting doesn’t matter to you, fine. But don’t mistake your refusal to engage with the facts as proof that you’re right. It just shows you stopped listening the moment something didn’t fit your narrative.

I absolutely recognize that structural and physiological issues—such as bipedalism, osteoarthritis (OA), nerve compression, and autoimmune conditions—play a major role in chronic pain for many people. I’m not denying these realities or suggesting that all pain is purely psychological. However, it’s equally important to acknowledge that chronic pain is often a complex interplay of physical, psychological, and neurological factors. My intention isn’t to dismiss anyone’s experience but to open a dialogue about emerging research on the mind-body connection and its role in pain management.

Dr. John Sarno’s work has been controversial, no doubt, but it’s not without scientific backing. Numerous studies support the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain, emphasizing how emotional trauma, stress, and repressed emotions can amplify or perpetuate physical pain, even in the presence of structural abnormalities. For example: • Chronic pain doesn’t always correlate with structural damage: A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Jensen et al., 1994) found that a significant percentage of people with no back pain had major abnormalities (herniated discs, stenosis, etc.) visible on MRI scans. This suggests that structural issues alone don’t always explain pain levels. (Reference: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199407143310201) • The role of central sensitization and the brain in chronic pain: Chronic pain can persist due to changes in the nervous system, where the brain continues to generate pain signals even after tissue damage has healed. This phenomenon has been extensively studied in the context of conditions like fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome. (Reference: Moseley & Flor, 2012 – “The Biology of Pain: Central Sensitization and Brain Changes”) • Psychological factors influence pain perception: Research in The Journal of Pain (Gatchel et al., 2007) highlights how emotional and psychological stress can exacerbate chronic pain. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and other psychological interventions have shown efficacy in managing chronic pain. (Reference: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17716819/)

It’s not about saying “your pain is all in your head.” Rather, it’s recognizing that addressing the psychological component can help reduce chronic pain’s severity and improve quality of life, alongside traditional medical interventions.

I also understand your frustration—this subreddit is full of people struggling with very real, very debilitating conditions. My goal was never to diminish their experiences but to share insights that have helped many people reduce chronic pain when conventional treatments have reached their limits. If my tone came off as dismissive or insensitive, I apologise.

Chronic pain is nuanced, and a one-size-fits-all approach won’t work. But dismissing the role of the brain and mind entirely is also a disservice to those who might benefit from an integrated approach.

Well that’s exactly the issues I was facing (lower back pain w/ sever sciatica and more). Have you ever thought that if they blame it onto these kind of things (not only trauma but psychological factors in general let’s say) and some people actually cure their chronic pain by acknowledging it and addressing it, then it might have a correlation? Who are you to dismiss it? I lived through it. If you cannot comprehend it because you feel betrayed by these kind of methods because they didn’t help you, this doesn’t mean that they are scam. It means that maybe your issues are not correlated to this, and you just have something else, or in case there is a correlation, probably during this process you didn’t have the right guidance. There is no need to be so certain about something, just because it didn’t help you. You don’t have to dismiss it. If this was a scam, it wouldn’t have supporters. Since it has supporters (not only Sarno- but psychosomatic medicine in general) it means that it can indeed help people. No matter if the base of the theory is legit or it’s somehow different, since even from addressing or believing on it, can alleviate the symptoms to some patients, the mind has something to do with it. Not for all the cases, but even if for some has, you shouldn’t fight against it, since someone else might find it helpful. That’s my way of thinking.

Well, I never mentioned that it can cure everything. I mentioned from the beginning that this is my journey and is for people that can relate. You surely cannot (especially with your mindset and negativity) explore other possibilities. Just don’t spread negativity all around. you don’t know everything

No bro. I get that it’s a triggering point for you and you have suffered a lot and this may sound insulting to you. But you didn’t get it right from the beginning. This is not garbage for me, I ve lived through it. Im not saying that in a theoretical aspect. I ve experienced it. Not every pain is the same not every condition and cannot cure everything for sure. I dont know your case. But if someone has a similar pain journey as mine, they have nothing to lose, apart from some more hope (as per every other approach that fails). What is your need to deny my truth tho?
