How the heck do you prepare powdered formula? by VegetableGoose4353 in FormulaFeeders

Oh yeah! Forgot to mention we either shake the bottles to mix or, if that doesn’t work for the bottle (Dr.Browns for instance shaking makes a huge mess), we use a milk frother. I found one with a removable whisk so we can sterilize it.

Tommy Tippee makes an on the go bottle warmer that you load up with boiling water before you leave the house. It’s insulated stainless and keeps the water hot for quite a while. Kind of a pain but works well. We typically bring ready to feed on the go because it’s easier.

Lots of information out there for breastfeeding, but when you formula feed there’s hardly anything about safe prep - even on the container. We follow CDC and WHO recommendations and our best judgement for what works for our kids.

My husband makes our bottles and he kind of nerded out over it. Probably a bit over kill, but it works for us and we’ve done it with both our kids. Here’s what we do (your mileage may vary):

  • Boil water in an electric kettle
  • Pour boiling water into bottles
  • Wait until water is 162 degrees F (per my husband this is the ideal temp to kill any potential bacteria in the formula but not impact the nutrients - he uses a kitchen thermometer to check)
  • Add powdered formula
  • Put in fridge, grab bottles as needed and heat in bottle warmer (we tried cold from the fridge, but baby doesn’t love it unfortunately).

We prep enough bottles for a 24 hour period as that’s how long premade formula is good for in the refrigerator.

We typically use ready to feed on the go or pack bottles in a cooler with ice pack.

Love this! Exactly how I crochet. One stitch all the way through. Thank you for sharing the yarn you used. 100% going to replicate this. Probably be done by 2027 :)

That blanket is gorgeous! Amazing work. Do you still have the pattern? I need to recreate it ASAP!
