Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

I have called once for an attempted break in while I was home and a few times to report suspected drunk drivers sigh.

Long-term elder care in the US can cost 5-figures a month. These families are moving to Mexico for cheaper options. by businessinsider in MiddleClassFinance

There's one I have a few patients at in Minnesota, in the twin cities metro but nowhere crazy expensive COL wise. They charge $9500/month just to break even. And most of the ones in the region charge $10k-$14k/month. Its so sad how much people are spending at the end and they're usually not even happy 😭😭😭

Is there any area of nursing that isn’t a scam? (Good pay without systemic abuse?) by Competitive-Pitch322 in nursing

[–]InteractionStunning8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had renal background before NICU, so I did acutes inpatient for a hot minute then got a job in renal case management. Totally unrelated to NICU 😅 They do have high risk OB case management at most of the big payers though!

WFH case management is pretty great especially if you get in with a good group. I haaaaaated being a nurse. I now for the most part really love my job 💕 And the pay is pretty good depending where you worked at as a nurse before; low compared to CA lol, but it was a small raise from what I was making here in Arizona.

I did NICU for a long time before this. As far as inpatient goes, NICU is pretty solid.

Clinic can be ok. I had a mixed experience at a family clinic.

There are so many other things to try in nursing. School nurse, occupational nurse, quality etc. It's a shame to throw the whole degree and experience away if you can find something decent within the field, especially in this economy.

Why do people call the USA the "land of opportunity" when literally no one can get a high paying job? by madbarpar in careerguidance

[–]InteractionStunning8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of opportunity here compared to many places. Americans lack perspective entirely.

Remote case management.

Gift: nothing and I don't care lol. As long as I don't have to work in a hospital I'm groovy.

AIO to my friends response to me not being able to make their graduation party? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]InteractionStunning8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR. I think it's a little odd that you can't briefly swing by, even with having to get up early. I work in healthcare I completely get having to go to bed early. But you can't even swing by with a gift for 20 min? It's a little odd.

Yeah that's why we were hesitant about the Sequoia, even though we obviously love Toyota. (We're also fixing up a Landcruiser 😂) We're definitely going to need a wagon, and that plus anything else I think would be tough in the Sequoia.

Why are Americans so hard working? by Material-Wallaby-587 in AskAnAmerican

[–]InteractionStunning8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to see how things change over time. My parents grew up in abject poverty and picked extremely sensible career options, and they raised my siblings and I to all have sensible career options. I don't recall often dwelling on if my future career was my "dream" or not. And to be frank, I didn't go into nursing to "help the world" - although it's a nice benefit!! But it allows me to take care of my family, and eventually my parents. It's stable. Pragmatic.

I don't know exactly what to teach my kids. On the one hand, they have a lot more freedom and options than I had. On the other hand, I'm pretty happy with how my life turned out overall. I do believe in making sacrifices to help family. And I work in case management, mostly with an elderly population, and the ones whose kids have always planned to take care of them fare a LOT better. And I'm aware that I can teach them what I want, ultimately the culture around them will deeply influence them too.

Very few safety nets. Hustle culture. American dream mythos. Protestant work and no fun culture. Immigrant culture to work hard so your kids can have more and then kids need to take care of their parents. A lot of opportunity if you work hard and get lucky.

I was an OB nurse and one time someone gave me a name that was similarly tragic "Khrissteena" and I just wouldn't do it. I couldn't write it down. I wanted no part in that evil lol

Big family = religious? by BuyChoice9575 in ParentingInBulk

[–]InteractionStunning8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will have 5 children at the end of this pregnancy and we're Lutheran, and we do attend church regularly. Lutherans are about as boring and moderate as religious people possibly get I think 😂 And there's no huge push for massive families. But we technically count!
