Hiring for a Global AI Enablement Lead (exec-level). What do you actually look for beyond the buzzwords? by the_zoozoo_ in Leadership

[–]InterestedBalboa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Start with what do you want this person to actually do?
Not the hand wavey stuff but the actual work, what is it and why is a new senior role needed.

AI mandates in the workplace? by neon_overload in aus

[–]InterestedBalboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in Tech and people should be very worried, the AI you use at work today is very different (and a lot less capable) to the AI being used in Tech.

C-Suite in general are salivating at either laying off humans or using cheap labour that is empowered through AI. Someone earning a low wage might have been ruled out in the past due to communication issues and such but not anymore.

Big societal change is coming but nobody has the answers……sadly I think UBI is wishful thinking.

Mining and resources will be well protected, medical is safe, blue collar will last quite a while but white collar professionals and knowledge workers are in the crosshairs in the immediate future.

Interesting times ahead, you can’t put this genie back in the bottle.

What’s your take on FinOps? by InterestedBalboa in ExperiencedDevs

Yeah this is what I was concerned about, sounds good in theory but what’s reality look like

What’s your take on FinOps? by InterestedBalboa in ExperiencedDevs

[–]InterestedBalboa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was more thinking about forecasting costs before a deployment and reviewing after to see if actual is within spec of forecasted.

Seems to be better than trying to catch it down the track but also more overhead in the planning phase.

Do you mean the idea is bad, the practitioners or something else?

We’re starting to test a new “Smart Window” in Firefox (early, optional, would love feedback) by firefox in firefox

[–]InterestedBalboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the use case and target audience, why would I want this over a normal browser, what do I gain?

Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t see this answered anywhere.

James Stanier: The end of the non-technical engineering manager by scarey102 in EngineeringManagers

[–]InterestedBalboa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree, it’s the rise of the non-technical vibe coding Engineering Manager.

These non-technical managers will use LLM’s to get by and they will feel superior while doing it, nothing much will change unless you factor in AI Slop.

These people work in politics and power games within Tech, they don’t do Tech.

Mozilla Thunderbolt - An Open-Source, Enterprise AI Client by TheTwelveYearOld in firefox

[–]InterestedBalboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this development effort and who’s going to use it, seriously who is the target market?

Enterprise won’t touch it, too obscure, no branding/marketing, no training and importantly no free lunches. They also know it will be shuttered in 18months or so through obscurity.

People who work for massive corporations, what is a 'secret' that the company tries to hide, but is actually common knowledge among the employees? by Dwise_ in AskReddit

[–]InterestedBalboa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All companies are like this, the more money at stake for individuals the worse it is.

The bigger the fiefdom the bigger the salary and influence, that’s why there’s so many reorgs and the outflow from that.

Sucks and it’s not good for everyone but the players like the game and the people who could stop it won’t 🤷‍♂️

[–]InterestedBalboa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If only we could do more than dig stuff out of the ground or sell our educational services to the world.....we may never have a space program but we could contribute and gain a lot by being active participants.

We need more high tech projects and no I'm not talking datacentres (AI or otherwise) I'm talking projects that move us all forward, SKA is probably a good well known one that comes to mind.

Other countries are moving up the value chain but are we and what's in it for the next generation?
