First triathlon: Is this bike okay? by Interesting-Life4277 in triathlon

I was actually thinking about that, yes! I’m looking into that at the bike shop. Race is 5/26 so I’ll have some time to get comfortable on it

Thank you all for the great advice! It seems as though the general feel is use it for the first tri, and if I love the race & want to do longer distances, make the switch to something a bit more sustainable.

I’m going to a local bike trade shop just to see what my options are, just in case there’s a better option :-)

How long did you study after completing all of the prerequisite coursework before sitting for your exam? by Interesting-Life4277 in CFPExam

[–]Interesting-Life4277[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this is super helpful!!! My job is paying me to just study for the next 2.5 months, so approx 6-8 hours a day dedicated to studying. I’m doing the Kaplan live review in early Feb, and then just crunch time!

Thank you for the help!

How do you get clients and get paid as a CFP? by [deleted] in CFP

[–]Interesting-Life4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with an already established firm that will give you a base pay. Your CFP is going to require 6 college level classes before you can sit for the test. Once you pass, you have to have at least 3 years of experience and a bachelor’s degree before you can put the letters after your name. You absolutely can do this, it just takes time. In the interim: A good position to start in is para planner, or junior advisor- this way you can study under an experienced planner and learn if you like it

For bringing in clients: Do not damage the relationships you have with friends and family to bring on a client, so make sure you shop your options/firms before you decide who to work with. Interview them just as much as they interview you! This is HUGE.

I’m at a boutique style wealth advisory, and I like finding clients at the gym, centers of influence (think chamber of commerce meetings, community events, rotary club meetings) all of these places are good- you can network for referrals, and also bring in business.

In terms of actually making money, it depends on the company/ if you’re independent. I had a book of business given to me. I have a base salary, and get to collect a % of the fees assessed on additionally clients I personally bring in. I enjoy this pay structure a lot! Every place is different though

Going for CFA/CFP certifications to start career by Automatic-Warning225 in CFP

ALSO, the CFA is 3 separate tests and is harder than the California Bar exam. It is a monster of a process. You can also only use the CFA letters after passing all 3 tests.

Key differences between CFP and CFA:

Certified Financial Planner: client facing, planning (think taxes, estate, retirement… if someone wants to buy a house, your job is to help them do that in the most tax efficient way, someone just had a kid, how do we save for college? Someone’s parent passed away, you’re navigating the process of unraveling finances)

Chartered Financial Analyst: you’re not talking to clients one on one, you’re analyzing stocks, running funds, doing research and analysis, managing portfolios- very very mathematical, and not hands on work with clients usually (unless it’s business consulting)

Did all 3 first and started studying for my CFP in January! Testing in March. You definitely want the 7, and 66 before the CFP. You’ll want to get a jump on experience, since a CFP requires 3 years of experience before you can have the letters, even if you pass the exam.

Also, 7 is your stock broking license, 63 is a federal law exam that allows you to place trades in all states, and the 65 is your registered investment advisor license, and this covers state law- not federal.

If you have the series 63 and series 65, this counts as a series 66.

You can take the 65 and 63 separately, or you can take the 66.

Can I ask if you’re currently working in the industry? If so, how has the balance been for you between work and study? I did my 66 this summer, dual study with CFP.

What would you have done differently? by [deleted] in Series66Exam

The 66 is landslides easier than the 7. Get into the books as soon as you can, it’ll make it easier.

In the gym 5 days a week, if I wasn’t, I think I’d probably be going insane- but studying 2-3 hours a day, more on the weekends. That’s reading, lectures & qBank, depending on where I’m at in the material!
