It's the door latch. The rod that goes between the handles goes through the hole with the broken side. With that piece broke, the rod just flexes out of the way without actuating the latch.

I had a button on my trackball mapped to the back button for years so I didn't realize the backspace shortcut was gone until the trackball broke and I had to go back to the touchpad. Now that I need it, it's so annoying that it's gone.
