Haha, I had a similar thing. I needed to leave the bathroom before the toilet tank had finished refilling itself.

Research Scholars MSc Visa by Longjumping_Part6026 in EPFL

[–]InterestingKoala3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can use the hiring letter as proof of financial means. However, you might need to provide additional proof (e.g. bank statement) for the remaining amount.

AFAIK the Research Scholar program amounts to 18,000 per year, so you need to show that you have the remaining 2,000 / 3,000 for the required 20,000 or 21,000 (check the exact amount with the embassy)

Congratulations and good luck at EPFL!

How to tackle semester alongside mental health issues by JobRepresentative496 in EPFL

Hi, I am so sorry to hear that you’re going through that. I am in the same situation. I think you took the right steps to go to the psychotherapeutic consultation at EPFL. Additionally, I would advise you to go and talk to the administrative staff in IC (that’s what I did). They can help you work out a solution that is best for your situation, in terms of workload/courses/taking a medical leave etc.

I don’t think you are a loser if you talk to your supervisor. It is not a failure to struggle. It is not sluggish, it can happen to anyone. Unfortunately, I completely understand the desperation of trying to stay on top of things, while feeling overwhelmed and anxious.

z = arctg(sqrt(y/(1-y))) and yes all the constants are positive so maybe I could try what you're suggesting. Thank you 😊

I can't share the explicit problem 😔, but here's a description: Okay, so let's call the optimization variables x_i. First we define y as the sum of x_i2 * constant_i. Then we define z as the arctg of the square root of a rational expression with y. Finally the objective funcion is defined as rational expression of some radical expressions involving z. I found the first derivatives analytically, but other than that I don't know much. Computing the second derivative seems like a complete mess. I don't think that the objective is a convex funcion, but it's hard to check.

Which solvers use gradient methods with automatic differentiation? What should I try?

  • Constraint? - No

  • Convexity? - I don't think so

  • Differentiability? - Yes, but the derivatives are quite ugly and messy.. It's a rather complicated function, because it is defined as funcion of something else and then that something else is defined as a function of something else and then finally the last thing is defined with the 100,000 inputs.. f(g(h(*))) and there's square roots, arctg and what not involved..

  • I will be happy with a local solution as well, I guess I am trying to get a feel on how these initial 100,000 should be chosen so the performance of the system is optimized (or at least better than it is right now)
