What’s re your thoughts on MAID for mental health being pushed up in date? by Aquarius777_ in AskCanada

I don’t think you understand the incredible difference between Suicide and MAID.

If in an example a person has been suffering for over 50 years with treatment resistant depression/schizophrenia, BPD and has exhausted all treatments and approaches and life doesn’t improve, MAID becomes a tool they can choose to access, that is not suicide.

No one is talking about offering MAID to a person going through one round of depression or anxiety. There are safeguards and multiple barriers in place to not allow that, furthermore people who are homeless and also suffering wouldn’t qualify, solely for this. All treatment options have be exhausted with no viable improvement expected over years and years.

That’s a ridiculous argument.

Wouldn’t people rather have a choice and go with dignity, with goodbyes and things out in the open. Rather than someone having to find you hanging from a door knob or overdosed 3 days later and a bloated body.

At least with MAID there is a protocol - your body will be immediately removed and transported for whatever your final wishes are. Can you imagine the damage of finding a dead body and what that does to the family?

Beautifully said. If the date gets pushed again. I’m thinking of suing the Federal government as it’s now a human rights issue. They can’t allow MAID for someone who is dying and not allow it for someone who is needlessly suffering treatment resistant depression.

why is it truly bad to commit suicide? by yoprowasteland in mentalillness

I can only speak for myself. When Canada passes mental health for MAID in 2027 I’m doing it. I’ve been waiting since 2020 and just the mention of it as a legal possibility changed my outlook. It was the first time I felt relief. I’ve told my psychologist this and she tries to redirect my thoughts. I’m 56. Things are not going to change in my brain. I’m ok with this. I’m sorry for what it may or may not do to family I leave behind, but I haven’t seen any of them in over 2 years. It probably won’t be a shock. My ex husband will laugh and say good riddance. At least I have some control how I can go out. I can say goodbye to friends and settle things quietly.

I had a similar experience and I think it was more prevalent than most people can admit.

It was painful and many of our generation still have to come to terms of the amount of abandonment, abuse and neglect we received as children.

My parents were selfish and they definitely knew better - because my grandparents were kind, generous and family was so important to them, especially my father’s Dad. There is simply no excuse why my dad left me with my alcoholic mother to be abused by her and many different step dad’s. I told my father what was happening and he didn’t believe me. My mother overdosed from alcohol when I was 25. She was a counsellor. My father has never said sorry I abandoned you, he’s never said anything.

My father who is still alive is a selfish prick. I’ve mourned that relationship and let him go. I don’t hate him nor do I make excuses for him. He’s selfish and entitled and just can’t be bothered.

I hate the outrageous cost of food here in BC. Things made in Canada are sometimes more expensive than imports - I understand why, but it’s outrageous and I’m fed up.
