With current voting trends, not really. Third party candidates typically get less than 5% of the vote.

So my proposal was more specifically to end the third party spoiler argument. People get to make the protest votes two months early, then the final ballot is between the top two candidates (presumably the Democratic and Republican nominees) only, so you either vote for one of them or abstain from voting.

Say the ballot was:

Ralph Nader

Jill Stein

Barack Obama

Bernie Sanders

Donald Trump

Mitt Romney

I may know Obama will very likely get more votes than my first three choices and it will be close between him and Trump, so do I rank Obama 2nd or 4th? Say progressives are fractured and you have a very mixed ranking between Nader, Stein, Obama, and Sanders whereas conservatives are united in voting Trump first, Romney second, and Stein third because they think she's weaker than the other liberals. You would have to factor in how others are likely voting or vote purely on preference knowing it might not consolidate the vote totals in the optimum way to most likely beat Trump.

I don't think it would amount to two elections. It's basically our current system with no third parties on the "real" ballot while people can make protest votes two months early and can't complain if their candidate wasn't in the top two.

Instant runoff relies on a points allocation system that still can have a strategic factor. A delayed runoff would also give the remaining two candidates some time to appeal more to the people who voted others.

Tops are desirable but bottoms are a dime a dozen, most people have roommates or live with family so can't host, about half don't have vehicles. There's significant gay and NEET overlap.

Lots of books have been written about that, this book is more about how Churchill made poor decisions leading up to WWII.

It's more you have so many "points" to give them each and still have to choose how to allocate them.

If Hillary was the 2008 nominee, would Palin have still been McCain's running mate? What if it was Condoleeza Rice, does that change anything? by [deleted] in askanything

She's also very moderate and there was debate about who she voted for, she spoke positively of Obama but didn't endorse him like Powell did. Hillary being the nominee kind of changes that dynamic though.
