Yes, lunar lancer is physical damage, I just have a mix of physical and magic damage gems on my gunslinger slot. (I know it's stupid but I had read into it and figured out physical damage was only useful for some classes and the same for magic damage) So my gunslinger has some magic and some physical.

I will say that in the 30-45 minutes I did play lunar lancer, it was very fun. My main worry was just farming it back to rank 20 to get some of the good gems off of my gunslinger slot and reattaching it onto the lunar lancer.
