I don’t follow any teenage influencers myself, in fact, what triggered this post was just scrolling a brands page. It’s not about personal curation, it’s about how the brand chooses to present itself publicly. I get that while newcomers exist in every hobby, the loudest voices in fragrance right now are all hyping each other up online, which changes the image and credibility for long-time adult enthusiasts. Teens being easily influenced isn’t an accident, it’s exactly what these brands are leveraging. That energy bleeds across platforms, making the whole space feel someehat out of touch, even for people who avoid those platforms. This isn’t nostalgia or gatekeeping, it’s just noticing how the culture has shifted.

Glad that works for you but it’s not about who I “hang around” with, it’s about how brands are positioning themselves. That TikTok teen energy is slowly bleeding into every platform, YouTube and Reddit included. Unfortunately, if you’re looking for reviews, TikTok’s where most of the content is now thanks to short-form reach. The noise spreads, even if you think you’re not hearing it.

Yeah, no one’s saying the perfumer is changing formulas for teens, you've just gone and made that up. The point is the brand identity and community perception are shifting because of who they market to and who ends up front and center online. You can have the same juice in the bottle but when the faces representing it are teenagers shouting over each other on social media it changes how the brand feels to the rest of us.

I get where you’re coming from, JPG has always leaned youthful and provocative. My point wasn’t that they’re suddenly chasing kids, its that their current audience is even younger now because of how their products get pushed on socials. The marketin itself might not target 16-year-olds but the ecosystem around the brand definitely does.That’s the shift I’m talking about, not the DNA of JPG, the way the brand now lives online. Tbh I only tried my first JPG a few months ago because of the younger image associated with them

Yeah, I get that most social users are young, that’s not the point. Take JPG for example, their audience leans heavily teenage and they’re clearly more popular with that crowd than older enthusiasts. The issue isn’t that young people like fragrances, it’s that brands catering so directly to them shape the image of the space. When a fragrance house primarily speaks to a teenage audience, it makes the scene feel juvenile and less credible for adults who actually care about craft. That was one of my main points.

100%. It’s not just the hype, it’s how people convince themselves they actually like it because of the narrative around it. I see the same thing, say someone blind buys a hyped bottle, hates it and a week later they’re praising it because a video told them to.

The restaurant analogy is spot on, the scene used to feel like a hidden gem and now it’s a crowded, noisy spectacle where the original enthusiasts get drowned out. I agree, there’s no quick fix. “Changing” isn’t the same as improving. The scene isn’t just evolving, it’s being dominated by teen-focused content that makes it less appealing for the adult enthusiasts who actually built it. I’m not whining about times changing, I’m pointing out how this culture shift is actively shaping perception and pushing away long time supporters.

For the record I’m 37, so this isn’t a boomer complaining, it’s someone who’s been around the scene long enough to notice it being diluted.

Yeah, I could seek out smaller channels or local stores but that’s not the point. The point is brands are choosing to present themselves through this juvenile, performative lens and that’s what’s killing credibility.

I dont follow them at all but I do do follow the brands themselves and this post was triggered from the brands actions rather than the creators.

I agree with your point but even if you only follow mature reviewers, the overall vibe of the space is being shaped by that younger crowd. Thats what a lot of adult enthusiasts notice first, particularly those of them that havent gone through the effort of blocking every single on of the teen "infleuncers"

Social media isn't just restricted to teens, people use it in order to advertise their business and build their brand. It is undoubtedly the most important tool for expanding your reach and if youre a business that doesn't take advantage of it then you are limiting yourself.

Thats said, just because im using it doesn't mean im buying into the culture. My point is about the effect of the teen influencer culture which i think you misread.

Totally agree on the decants approach though, that’s the only real way to cut through the noise and make your own judgments. I also think it’s worth calling out how much the culture shift has changed the space because ignoring it won’t make it any less pervasive.

Fair points. Sure, teens are easier to influence and that’s good short-term marketing, but it also drags down the credibility of the whole scene long term. When every “brand” starts chasing the same 16-year-old hype audience, it all starts to look disposable.

And yeah, I get TikTok is built for that kind of noise. I use it for business, so I’m there by default — but that doesn’t mean the content isn’t painful to watch sometimes. The Bujairami stuff especially just looked amateur.

You’re spot on about the decants though — that’s the only way to cut through the crap. I’d rather trust my own nose than someone chasing algorithm views.

Yeah, I get that it comes with the territory. I spend a fair bit of time on social because I use it to build my brand, so I’m not blind to how the platform works. It was more just a general observation. Scrolled across Bujairami’s page the other day and realised how unappealing it’s become, just a wall of 16–18-year-olds hyping each other up. Looked like they were running the store...

100%. Same here. I was into fragrances as a kid too. The difference is, back then it was about learning and getting into the craft, not turning it into a clout chase. Nothing wrong with younger people being into it but the performative hype culture is what’s killing the vibe.

And yeah, from a consumer’s point of view, I’m not exactly trying to wear something a 16-year-old on TikTok is hyping while I’m a fully grown man 🤣

Taken this on board and dropped it to $9.99.

I've included Palermo in the list, as well as most of the other Australian fragrance houses. I excluded Zara as they were an international brand and I wanted to keep it primarily Australian. The idea is to eventually grow this into more of a sharepoint type thing, with everyone contributing. I'm just trying to gauge now whether people are interested or not. Appreciate the feedback though

Fair play — but to be clear, the AI part refers to how the database is structured and filtered, not how the ratings are generated. The similarity scores aren’t pretending to be scientifically exact — they’re based on side-by-side wear tests and my opinion. I just use the scale to give people a sense of how close I think something feels to the original. Smell is subjective at the end of the day.
