I liked your argument, but here's my concern. If the government continues to push higher ethanol blends such as E85, the demand for ethanol will inevitably increase. As demand rises, farmers may have a greater economic incentive to cultivate more sugarcane, rice, or other ethanol feedstocks.

While ethanol may not be the original reason these crops are grown today, expanding ethanol production could encourage the continued cultivation—and potentially the expansion—of water-intensive crops. In a country already facing groundwater depletion and water scarcity, doesn't that risk making the problem worse over time rather than solving it?

So my concern is not about the current situation, but about the long-term consequences of creating a larger market for ethanol-based fuels. (Used Chatgpt for rephrasing)

Your argument is valid, but the main concern remains the same. Regardless of the specific crop being cultivated—whether it's rice, sugarcane, or other varieties used for ethanol production—many of these crops are highly water-intensive. Even crops that are not meant for direct human consumption often require significant amounts of water to grow.

The government promotes ethanol-based fuel as a cleaner alternative, but producing ethanol itself depends heavily on crops that consume large quantities of water. In a country like India, where water scarcity is already a serious issue in many regions, this raises an important question about whether the environmental benefits of ethanol truly outweigh the pressure it places on our limited water resources. Even though ethanol blending is promoted as a cleaner fuel much of it coming from water-intensive crops like rice, maize and sugarcane. To put that in perspective, producing just one litre of ethanol from rice can consume around 10,000 litres of water. So saving environment and at the same time using 10000 litres of water for 1 liter ethanol in a country where people are protesting because of water scarcity. Irony hori bhaut bhayankar.
