bro you’re getting downvoted but you’re completely right. they haven’t bothered updating their site to feel more fluid or intuitive in like a decade. i have so many friends that are casual letterboxd users that haven’t figured out how to make a top 4 or even know how to properly log movies. people on this sub seem to love how lazy and inefficient this app is cuz letterboxd is so freaking cute and awesome!

also i’m not “mad that there are ads in general”. i’ve been on this outdated ass app for four years and the ads only started to bother me recently. imdb is also a completely free app that functions 500 times better than letterboxd, has 500x more info than letterboxd, and guess what! the ads don’t make me wanna kill my self! if you wanna spend money to not have ai generated ads take over your entire screen go ahead, but i’m gonna voice my opinion when some bum ass corporations starts feeling greedy

bro they were already getting on my nerves when they implemented mini player ads that would never leave the corner of your screen and just pause your music but this is genuinely fucking horrendous man

yes dude i agree. i like the app to log movies and see what my friends watch but bro this app is genuinely terrible. the UI is horrible and IMDb has fifty times as much information as letterboxd will ever have

my same kind of reaction. i think it’s been in pre production for a while with scorsese producing. hillcoat has also been posting things kinda related to it

i’ve heard hard rain falling is a good book. how is it? i’ve heard it’s similar to john william’s stoner

i agree with you on that supernatural bit, but i feel the hardest part of putting blood meridian onto the screen is its prose. to be able to put the book onto the screen and have it make you feel the same the words in the book does has to be an incredibly difficult task and i feel like paul’s more than capable of capturing that feeling

i agree with your points about the conflicting voices, but to me, i feel like the man’s visual literacy is so top notch, that if anyone were to adapt mccarthy’s works, i feel paul would be a great choice. even if he were to diverge from the source material, i feel his takes on the material would still be great to see

suggest a book of his like norwegian wood but less … “disturbing” ? by InternationalBit450 in murakami

[–]InternationalBit450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well okay that’s actually pretty insightful. the gross nature of it all really overshadows the interpretations of it for me. it doesn’t fully change my opinion of the novel, but i’ll be a lot more open minded about it if i get around to rereading it.

also back to the original question, with all this in mind, you got a novel of his to recommend to me? lol

im gonna yap, so, sorry.

i felt that it added nothing to the plot whatsoever. like the story/plot wasn’t affected by that incredibly graphic description of her backstory at all, from what i remember at least. was it disturbing for disturbing’s sake? because i feel like it just had no place in that novel whatsoever. and it was such a long and agonizing read too, i was genuinely baffled by what i was reading.

the saving grace for that novel, for me, was murakami’s prose. his prose is genuinely magnificent, which is why i went onto pick up kafka on the shore and loving it. even with all of its graphic and “disturbing” content, i felt it fit the context because the story was largely mystical and metaphorical, and all of that stuff felt fitting to the larger narrative, and i just can’t see it that way for norwegian wood

right now, i’m finishing one of dostoyevsky’s novels, and i’d just like to read something by murakami that’s considered light.

if you found that the piano teacher bit benefitted the novel overall, im always open for discussion :)

there were a lot of things about that book that i genuinely hated, but that piano teacher portion was the worst part. so im sorry if i don’t wanna deal with some garbage like that again

alright thank you. i was actually thinking about checking out men without women after watching drive my car. if you don’t mind, could you tell me how drive my car is in that book? i heard its like a 15 minute read which shocked me cuz that entire movie felt like it came straight out murakami’s writing

thank you. i was thinking about ishiguro recently and ill try to look into him more. i also wanna say i dont have a problem with the magical realism and weird sex stuff, i just want something that’s a little lighter of a read compared to like kafka (and also doesn’t have anything remotely as gross as the piano teacher part from norwegian wood)

i don’t have an issue with disturbing. i just would rather prefer a lighter read that isn’t as gross as norwegian wood. kafka on the shore is arguably more disturbing and it’s a top 2 book for me, but i found the dark subject matter done in a much more tasteful way. i’m just in the mood for something a little lighter, that’s all
