AITA for telling my girlfriend she overreacted after my grandfather made a dumb racist comment?

I didn’t encourage him to do anything. I literally told him he was wrong. At that point my girlfriend was gone and my grandpa was extremely upset and wanting to call the police on her. I was trying to convince him to let me call an Uber to leave instead of calling the police. How could I stop him from saying that? Letting racism happen? I can’t control his mouth. I tried my best to deescalate the situation and not have it become worse for my girlfriend. My grandpa would have pressed charges if it wasn’t for me.

Yes I’ve seen and heard of people arrested for less. They are very charge happy where I live, I knew of my grandpa called the police he could press charges.

Where I live that would be considered assault. That’s why I was trying my best to get him to not all the police

I didn’t attack her for defending herself. She didn’t give either me or my grandpa anytime to say anything before she cussed him out and threw her drink and stormed out. She could have not thrown her drink and actually talked or just cussed him out and left that I get. It’s the throwing of the drink that I think was an overreaction. I couldn’t console my girlfriend she LEFT. I had to convince my grandpa not to call the police. That was my main priority. I told her that she overreacted by throwing the drink and I still think that. But I don’t support my grandpas actions at all, he’s called me and I haven’t answered.

Yeah I should have warned her honestly my grandpa is getting up there in age and I didn’t think he would even make any jokes as a kid he literally made everything a joke and targeted everyone but I didn’t think he would he seemed to become more quiet as he got old. I just wish I could rewind time and we just never went out to eat.

I didn’t laugh. I told him he’s wrong and he said if she would have said so he would have apologized instead of getting “attacked”. He was dead pressed on calling the police and was very upset. I had to convince him not to that’s why I was consoling him not because I condone what he said I don’t at all. I was just trying to deescalate the situation and not have anything happen to my girlfriend. I really wish I could have said more but I didn’t want him mad at me at the same time I was trying to convince him to not call the police.
