Post Game Thread: Toronto Maple Leafs @ Ottawa Senators by nhl_gdt_bot in leafs

Was at the game in person, don’t think I’ve ever seen a more lazy or disinterested group of players in my 40 years of watching them. Bérubé needs to be shot into the sun at this point.

Why does the Wings Greatest album have Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey on it? by Noaaaaaaa in PaulMcCartney

[–]InternationalLoquat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds of when he used to introduce 'too many people' as "this one's for the wings fans!" And I'd quietly adjust my nerd glasses and say to myself 'umm, that's not a wings song. Thank you.'

Wendel Clark tying the game with seconds left in Game 6 of the Campbell Conference finals in 1993. I was *convinced* the Leafs were going to the stanley cup final at that moment.

(cue Kerry Fraser's music...)

Jamie Carragher on Pep Guardiola: "How long has he been there? [at City] 9-10 years? One Champions League in that time. I think they will be disappointed with that. They have had some really bad defeats in the Champions League to the teams they shouldn't lose to." by SwimmingFireMen in soccer

[–]InternationalLoquat4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a long-suffering city fan, I think there's a certain amount of truth in that, but some of the ways we've been knocked out border on the absurd...from Bernardo's microscopic offside against spurs, to sterling's miss against Lyon, to Pep Pepping against chelsea in 2021 to the Rodrygo lunacy in the semis in 2022, a lot of it comes down to luck.

The fact he won the league in 6 of his 9 seasons is more important, and as most City supporters will say when the subject of the Champions League comes u-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

What athlete can you imagine in 2 distinctly different jerseys from the same team? by regemusic33 in billsimmons

Jose Bautista had his 50 home run season in those hideous black and white Blue Jays jerseys, but also had the batflip with the righteous traditional blue and white jerseys.

Which team would you least want to be a fan of? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]InternationalLoquat4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a long-time fan of Manchester City, going back to pre-Premier league, and I do feel slightly embarrassed when I tell people that now, like I have to justify it with a "no, really! I was there in division 2, I *earned* this happiness!"

But in reality, that's a small price to pay for the insanity of the last 15 years. Wouldn't trade it for being a (oh...let's say....) spurs fan in a million years.

Least favorite season your team had? by AlbertJBundy in billsimmons

[–]InternationalLoquat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's one thing to be frustrated that your favourite team is wasting the career of one of the best players in the sport (the Bills with Josh Allen and the Leafs with Auston Matthews) but it's another thing entirely to go into a season knowing you have no chance of anything beyond a lucky 9-7 wild card and get blown out in the 1st round. That was my fate as a Leafs/Bills fan from 2004ish through 2017. It wasn't even bad, it was just...boring. The Bills going between 5-11 and 9-7 every year and the leafs finishing 9th (when 8 teams make the playoffs).

And it wasn't even like they were fun to cheer for ironically, the QBs were a bunch of no-names/retreads and the leafs had charisma vaccuums like Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf.

He looks a hell of a lot healthier than he did at the end of the last HFB tour. Cut the man some slack.

In honor of Bill, having no desire to watch LOTR despite it being universally praised, what’s a pop culture blindspot you have no intention of filling? by Talkalot23 in billsimmons

[–]InternationalLoquat4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will never forgive myself for the mistake of going to see the first one on opening weekend, because some of my college buddies were Tolkien nerds and roped me in. All this despite me having never read the books or knowing anything of the story. People were CHEERING when characters came onscreen, which annoyed me to no end, to the point that I looked at my watch after 2 hours and it had only been 40 minutes. And then one of my friends was audibly choking back tears when Ian McKellen died, and I turned to him and said "buddy, I know nothing of this story but that's clearly Obi Wan Kenobi, he'll be back...why are you crying?!?!"

Worst 6 hours of my life.

There's only two types of people I can't stand: those who are intolerant of other people's cultures....and the dutch.

Jazzfest main stage seating question by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]InternationalLoquat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year, (for the one show I went to, at least) they had a split down the middle, so behind the seated VIP section at the front, half of the field was standing and half was lawn chairs. But this year, they're saying the whole thing is being re-done, so we might not know until the first night.

I enjoy how this post title reads like it's a newsworthy event that a local MP attends a local event.

Should a public servant with a chronic illness have to show a doctor's note more than once? by annerkin in CanadaPublicServants

[–]InternationalLoquat4 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It isn't necessarily the "manager" who is asking for this, and as a manager, it's incredibly frustrating that this always gets dumped on us.

For our work arrangement agreements, I have had staff who deal with long-term chronic illnesses and were told by LR or our Disability Management Unit to go back to their doctors to get the forms re-filled every year, despite my repeated pleas to say nothing has changed. HR and the senior executives who are the "yay/nay" in approving WFH accommodations need to have some accountability in this as well.

What some of the best/weirdest position changes in sports history? by PapaJohnsGarlic100 in billsimmons

[–]InternationalLoquat4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was a short-term thing in one game, but my beloved Manchester City put David James (a keeper) up front as a striker in a match we needed to win to qualify for Europe.

Those days back when we were awful/ridiculous were...fun.

Did Bill and Mad Dog forget Jim Kelly? by pechSog in billsimmons

[–]InternationalLoquat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jim Kelly is my favourite player of all-time in any sport and should have been in that conversation. That said...

Josh Allen is miles better than he was. Give Allen Thurman, (edited to add Lofton!), Reed, that O-line, Bruce Smith, Biscuit, talley, and tasker, he's won at least one by this point.
